The Squad planning thread

People thinking that there will be lots of players leaving in the Summer might be surprised in my opinion.

As the squad stands today the two oldest outfield players, by nearly four years, are Gundo and KDB.

The chances are that they will go, will be replaced, and that will be it.

Maybe a full back coming in if Walker stays with Milan for his final year.

I think the two midfielders will be big names and perhaps the groundwork has already been done.

I can’t see us getting rid of that many players, proven winners and experience. It would cost ridiculous amounts of money to replace and probably a season or two to let basically a new team gel together.

I’d also say that keep list looks pretty weak and lacking in any experience
I don’t think Bernie will leave due to age, but he might leave due to his form being mostly awful.

Not his fault. We’ve run him into the ground. He’s a legend no matter what.

We suddenly have the 4th biggest squad and the 8th youngest in the PL and the World’s most valuable.

No more excuses.

Yep. We’re sort of looking like this now

Glaring gap is at right back. If Cambiasso is good enough then he’d be ideal if he can play both sides. Or maybe a Frimpong type player
Obvious departures for next season from this look like Gunda and Grealish. And I can’t see where Nunez fits in if we do get a right back and everyone is fit.
Largest squad we’ve ever had when fit. The two new young ‘uns at the back should have time to settle and bed in next season with 8 centre backs on that list.
Hopefully Dias and Ake can get fit soon and this season might not be the write off we all thought it’d be. Top 4 and FA cup win would be great from here. And I know people - including myself - think the World Club Cup is a step too far, but it’d be nice to have that gold badge on our shirt again next season

Maybe a rest rather than sell then.

Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. These are good players.

Agree. We’re not going to shift people who have a year left on their contract (Stones/Bernardo) and we’re going to take a huge loss moving others on (Grealish) that could yet come good again. We also have to accept that shipping out masses of players in one summer just leaves the squad depleted again, with many of the new players inexperienced or unused to the rigours of the domestic calendar. I’m unconvinced, however, that we’ll necessarily be bringing in big name replacements. Few had predicted we’d be signing the 4 that have arrived and that pattern may continue.

Yes I am guessing at that. I just think to get back to our best we need the equivalent of a prime Gundo and prime KDB. That will be far from easy and I think it will have to be Florian Wirtz standard rather than a Gonzalez and I’m not doubling Gonzalez! Big money.

Creative midfielder has to be priority. Arsenal game Marmoush and Haaland made runs and no one spotted them. We need a creative midfielder that can spot those runs in behind. Kev is the only one that can he's at the tail end of his career. Viana has talent ID he will have someone in mind, I dont think it will be Wirtz or Musiala but someone we don't know about. U23 talent again.

We see how much this experience does for us. They All sit on the bench since they suck

Baena would be my guess.

I think there also has to be a bit of other players now stepping up to the plate. Last year, de Bruyne was out for 17 League games and our form was patchy. We seemed to lack creativity with the team pining for de Bruyne's return, and once he did we went on a long unbeaten run. Same both last year and this year with Rodri. His absence is a blow, true, but it should not lead to such a collapse in form. These two players are fantastic, don't get me wrong, but we need a squad that is capable of overcoming such absences. We also have to accept that Wirtz may prefer to stay in Germany or go elsewhere, so we need to have an alternative/alternatives.

From my count for next season the squad is too big think we'd need to sell 2 to buy 1, for the free 17 places. If we want to fill all our places if Grealish and Carson go then they would need to be replaced with home grown players.

I agree with this and possibly a CB goes too

i agree i dont think we can carry both ake and stones who while both fantastic player simply cant stay fit, imo one will go
Maybe but think if we replaced either it would need to be a homegrown player. We might not replace them though at least not with another centre back,

Stones (2026) and Ake (2027) are going to be hard to shift unless they want to go and hanker a fresh challenge abroad. The dates are the summers when their respective contracts expire.

Cambiasso is would be a smart buy at this moment because it covers both back positions, so you don't have to buy LB and RB at the same time, and you still have room to solve the problems you have in the middle of the field (which are huge), we need 6 players. The most important condition is that they are able to run.
We have a left back. What we need is a Right back. If Ake is staying, id rather have him to CB and Nico O'Reilly as Gvardiol's backup at Left beck

There's a HG one out of contract soon? cant defend but will give Haaland another 10-15 goals? #notimnotserious
