Poor result. Freidel was useless for the second.

Disagree about verthoghen, done well at spurs. Most people on here have him in their team of the season too. It weren't long ago you said Vertonghen is the worst buy in premiership for the summer.

As for adebayor I knew he would miss. I'm sure it's still in orbit, what a wanker!

Friedel should never have been playing in the first place. So its AVB's tactical mistake. Playing an away game that needed to be won, he should have been prepared for any eventuality.
In fact, seeing your team's predicament, I've also changed my opinion that Pantilimon should be playing in the FA Cup semi-final vs Chelsea, however much he deserves it. Joe Hart all the way.

Adebayor - lol

Only just seen Adebayor's pen. Pmsl ! Serves the spoilt tosser right.

Feel a slight pang of guilt for saying that considering he gave me such am enjoyable moment the day he ran the length of the pitch to the Arsenal fans.

Unfortunately all 3 clubs never witnessed him running that fast when ball is in play.

I think he could have played in sig last night and the penalty was ridiculous.

Gutted we're out. Wanted to win Europa.

As someone said avb should have played Lloris, I think he should have, but decided to play brad every Europa game after Lloris took number one spot in the league.

Fair play to Basel, I hope they go onto win the thing

Meh, I found the performance encouraging especially since we didn't have Bale and Lennon. If AVB persists with Parker in the league after how well Carroll, Huddlestone, and Holtby played I'll be angry. Walker finding his form again is good news too.

We were bound to lose as soon as it went to penalties. We haven't won a penalty shootout in almost 20 years (1994). I actually found it pretty amusing, wasn't too gutted because I knew we wouldn't win on penalties and I never really thought we had much chance of winning the competition anyway. I'm still hopefully of finishing 4th in the league, but knowing our luck Chelsea will win the Europa league, come 5th, and Uefa will suddenly decide that the Europa league winner gets to play in the Champions league at the expense of the 4th placed team lol.

I thought we played well in spells too. We gifted them two goals and they suddenly woke up once Jan got sent off. I think we played better overall. Carroll likes to pass forward which parker can rarely do.

I remember listening to the 94 game on the radio, we are worse than england for penalties.

I'm glad we're out of it if we were going to keep playing Friedel because we would have never beaten Benfica or Chelsea with Friedel in goal. Just an extra two games that we wouldn't have needed.

Basel were a tougher opponent than either Inter or Lyon which is a great credit to them. I remember our fans being happy that we drew Basel but they turned out to be a very good team that could win the tournament.

They were 33-1 to win it when they drew spurs, I'd like to see their odds if they get fenerbache. Good luck to them!

On Europa I would have loved to have won it, I think we were good enough. AVB would have loved to win it again, I think he was dreaming of a chelsea final!

We can hold our heads high safe in the knowledge that Spurs gave the UEFA Europa League the respect it deserves and played our hearts out last night in Basel.

Indeed you did. Your manager deserves credit for trying to win a trophy unlike the other manager in North London who would sacrifice every competition for a top 4 place.

It's vexing to think how much better could have done if the five first-choice starters who were injured had played (Bale, Lennon, Kaboul, Sandro & Defoe).

Most Spurs fans always provide an excuse for a loss. It's either injuries, the referee, unfair another club can spend more, dodgy lasagna or just luck (e.g. deflections). Has a team ever deserved to beat Spurs? The club should change it's motto to "Everyone is luckier than us. It's not fair".

I have always thought that the problem with Spurs is that a loser mentality runs right throughout the club, and has done for quite a while. How else can you explain the late season collapses, more often than not losing important games, blowing games in the final few minutes and the ‘we are always unlucky’ attitude of the fans.

The silver lining to our exit is that it focuses attention on the Premier League and the race for Champions League football next season.

If you finish above Chelsea, will it be due to Spurs being better or that Chelsea spread themselves too thinly by competing strongly for 4 competitions, as opposed to the two that Spurs have been competitive in?

Still, wasn't a bad campaign by Tottenham. That probably gives them a lot more coefficient points than we got in the CL.

Therein lies our problem. Next year we are likely to drop back into pot3 again with the prospect of another hard group. If Arse or Spuds qualify for the Champs League, they will be rated higher so should get easier fixtures.

Harsh. It looked a reaction save to me in conditions that make goalkeeping difficult. It would be more appropriate to blame Dawson, Dembele and Vertonghen.

It was just a handful of us, including me, who said that Vertonghen was poor, overrated etc.. I stand by that. That doesn't mean he cannot produce a very good performance but how can someone be regarded as a good defender when they make so many basic mistakes on a regular basis. We have a centre-half who turned 20 the other week, Nastasic, and he already looks a better defender than Vertonghen. Vertonghen has made more mistakes in the last month (the month in which he was awarded POTM) than Nastasic has in the netire season. However, Vertonghen scores the occasional goal, and very good goals to be fair, that mask his defensive mistakes. Similar to Vermaelan a couple of years ago, in that respect.

The Annual meltdown is in full steam right now, but I am sure we will get a table from THFC6061 that will show otherwise.

I also don't get the hype behind Vertonghen. Defensively, he is very suspect. Like Manc in London said, he may go down the Vermaelen path.
The way he is being praised, I think you guys are gonna say that Rafael is a very good defender as well.

This kind of justification puzzles me as well. What do they think goes on in the top 4? You're competing to win at least 4 (sometimes 3 with the LC only taken seriously by a few) trophies every year. If you can't do it now, it'll be a lot harder then. The cup games is what makes being in the top 4 so difficult. You've got dreadful CL ties always coming up between away matches to your title rivals and a bloated schedule in general.

This year Chelsea have had an outrageous schedule with 7 competitions to compete in and we're still managing to handle it. A great first 11 (which I admit Spurs have) doesn't make a great squad. 11 men just can't handle a modern club schedule alone.

You're entitled to your opinion but I disagree. I don't think he's the best defender in the world, far from it, but he has talent and done well for spurs this season. I disagree what you said a few weeks ago that's he the worst signing in the league for the summer

I thought friedel should have done better personally. We had injuries but we didn't first leg and they outplayed us, they deserve to go through.

As for natastic I think he's been superb, same with zabaleta who I think gets better every season. I think most neutrals would agree with me. He's been getting plaudits in the media and mcmanamans was raving about him all night long the other day.

You don't need to make comparisons with city and spurs players to make a point, you see enough of that on redcafe. United and city are superior teams and have better players.

For spurs to be in the top 4 some players must be playing well. I think bale, dembele, lloris, lennon and vertonghen are our standout players. Sandro was too prior to his injury. I don't like it when people say our players are shit or overated because X player couldn't get in the United squad or city team etc

-- Fri Apr 12, 2013 2:38 pm --

AVB wanted Huddlestone to cut off his afro if he scored. Thursday had his chance, now he has to wait another 12 years

Changed my mind about the schedules, ours is now absurdly harder. Stars denote number of days between games.

Chelsea: City (N) ** Fulham (A) *** Liverpool (A) *** Basel (A) ** Swansea (H) *** Basel (H) ** United (A) ** Tottenham (H)(Likely reschedule) ** Villa (FA Final or League) *** Villa (A) (League) *** Europa Final *** Everton (H).

Not one week rest from the FA cup semi onwards. With rearrangements because of cup results we could get a week between United, Tottenham and Villa. Winning both cups and getting fourth would be monumental in light of that schedule.

Spurs: City (H) **** Wigan (A) ***** Southampton (H) *** Chelsea (A) *** Stoke (A) ******* Sunderland (H)

The only strain they have is Chelsea and Stoke away 3 days apart. Chelsea play a maximum of 12 with a minimum of 10. Spurs play 6. Our schedule could be double theirs in the same few weeks. If they fail to get 4th it'd be one of the most catastrophic bottle jobs I've ever witnessed.
