The Tottenham Thread 12/13

Spurs were lucky to get a point. But it might not be a bad point at the end. Wigan played really well. Hard to believe they are in the relegation zone.

One of those sides that fail to get reward for effort and put in enough shockers to make life hard for themselves.

If Villa beat Sunderland on Monday they might need 8 points from there last 4 games to stay up which this time will be beyond them I would suggest.

I told you guys Wigan will be a tough game. You better toughen up a bit and get that 3rd or 4th spot!

Not signing Leandro Damaio, and the Joao Moutinho deal falling through in the summer, could be very costly. With those two, I reckon 3rd spot would be almost done. Lack of squad depth is the problem.

Spurs needed 3 points today. It now likely they may need to beat Chelsea at Stamford bridge to put them on course for that last champions league spot.
Problem is they haven't won at Stamford Bridge in 23 years - I'm sure they've got a graph for it. If we beat Swansea today we could even afford a draw in that game. Told you Spuds that you don't want to be facing relegation sides at the business end of the season.

from opta joe

24 - As it stands, Tottenham have lost 24 points from winning positions this season, 2nd most behind Southampton. Slips.

I guess but technically we also gained a point from a losing position. Same against Everton.

So lucky to have got a draw this weekend. A lucky Bale goal and Wigan will be hard done by. I think the way the Spurs season is going its going to run out the luck will soon turn against them. Think Arsenal will finish in the top 4.

Jan Vertonghen has actually made it to this season's team of the year.
His career path's similarity to that of Vermaelen is amazing.
Vermaelen also had a break out first season in english football where due to his goal scoring prowess people ranked him highly. He also made it to team of the year that season in 2009-10. Reports started linking him to Spanish clubs and since then we have all come to know how poor he is defensively. I have a strong suspicion that Vertonghen is going to be the same.

Nice try.

But City (along with every other Premier League club) would kill to have a player of Vertonghen's quality.

Then why did they not kill? :)

Vertonghen is a class act but we have a same quality in our hands with Nastasic who is 6 years younger than Vertonghen and cost approximately the same amount. You might get a point when you say every other team would be glad to have him but maybe it's not true in our case as we have the best defense in the league (for somewhat like 3 years now).

I don't see him starting over Nastasic and Kompany. we have conceded 31 goals this season while you have 43. I hope you stay here till next year when this vertonghen bubble bursts.

But I'd rather have Kompany and Nastasic any day of the week. Despite a poor season by his standards, Kompany is undeniably one of the world best defenders and Nastasic has everything he needs to be even better than Kompany. If Nastasic was English the media would be masturbating furiously on a weekly basis. He is very good already and will only get better.

Spurs fans love to talk about how good their CB's and goalkeeper are but their defensive record is mid table and miles off the best teams in the league. Even Liverpool has conceded fewer. Their defensive issues are probably why they're depending on Arsenal and Chelsea to slip to get into the CL because they've been scoring enough goals.

Funny how no other club "killed" to get him then. He's good going forward but only a decent defender. I'd have Vinny/Nasty every single time over him.

not to forget the best CMs in the league in Dembele and Sandro.
and Kyle Walker was young player of the year last time.

Fixed your post, although I concede you have a point.

To be honest, I think our keeper is very good and our centre halves decent too. I don't think our full-backs are that great defensively, which might explain our less than stellar defensive record, but even with that said it's hardly awful. We've "only" conceded 7 & 8 more than our direct rivals this season which is not a huge gap. We certainly aren't fantastic defensively but we are far from terrible.

Oh, and we're not relying on Chelsea and Arsenal to slip up to make Champions Leagues. It's entirely in our hands. Same for Chelsea. The only team that needs other results to go their way even if they win every game is Arsenal. I don't actually think we'll do it now, but I certainly haven't given up!

I don't think we will either, but we can hope for nine points and hope arsenal lose one against newcastle or wigan
