The Tottenham Thread 13/14 (continued)

Possession means little when you are doing nothing with it. Tottenham had more of the ball and Chelsea were giving it away easily, but they always looked like they would get in at some point. People complain about referee decisions too much. People were doing it at our game today. If the officials had got everything right then Tottenham would have been down 1-0 and playing with ten men from the third minute.

They will probably make fourth and they can hope for a Liverpool collapse as unlikely as that is. They need to win all of their remaining games and hope Liverpool lose to City, Chelsea and United at least.

The only consolation is that their players have not lost value. Loris to PSG, Holbty back to Germany, Sandro, Lamela back to Italty etc. They can easily raise 60/70 million in the summer with players they sell and then reinvest in a more balanced squad.
The game changing moment was the Vertonghen slip and back pass. Game was on a knife edge up until then. Spurs always looked like they might be undone by a ball in behind them, but they had more possession. As you say possession should not be an end in itself, but usually it allows you to control a game

Spurs have a lot of quality in their squad and it's just a question of finding the right balance, and the right coach and sticking by them. But competition for the top 4 is so fierce that no one has any patience.

I'm not sure Spurs will be able to recoup all their transfer outlays. Losing Defoe is a big loss. They too him for granted.
The game's not on a knife's edge if one team looks like scoring and the other does not. The most likely thing that would have happened is Hazard or Oscar would have played someone in at some point and Chelsea would have scored.

Spurs have decent quality, but before the season started I said they had the weakest squad out of the top 6 teams. Since then the other teams have only gotten stronger and Tottenham continue to keep chopping and changing. Next year the best they can hope for is probably 5th if Liverpool really struggle to cope with Cl football (presuming they don't add more depth in the summer).

Was Sherwood post-game showing leadership, or was it the type of commentary that is too honest for a manager to recover from?

He reminded me of this:

sh1t club, sh1t squad.
Never bothered chelsea yesterday and got the deserved result.
The red card was harsh but it was a penalty 9 out of 10 times.
Said it after last season as well, Vertonghen is just Vermaelen mark II.

This guy is a clown, he talks too much. Idk how spurs fans are lapping it up.

Before the match:

-Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood says he is relishing the chance to become the first manager to beat a Jose Mourinho-led Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

-Blaming the fact that he's a rookie manager and thus (surprise surprise) not trusted with time and money

After the match:
“Lack of characters. Too many of them are too nice to each other. You need to show a bit more gut and not want to be someone’s mate all the time and it can’t always be me having a pop – they have to drag it out of each other. It hurts me.
“I’m not going to forget this by the time we hit the motorway. Some might – but on to the next match. That is the nature of the game.”

Blaming the players because they lost their spirit after they're down 2-0. Great leadership:) Always blame others not yourself, timmy.

I like the cut of that man's jib; get him on the coaching staff at City ASAP!

I really wish THFC was still here :(
After all spurs would be top if they'd scored twice as many goals and conceded half as many in each game, although we still would have beaten them twice.

Think sherwood will get the sack if they don't win on Sunday or at least show a spirited performance

Considering his lack of managerial experience I think its been silly of him to go in all guns blazing having a go at his players etc
