The TV Quiz Show Thread

One thing i have noticed watching old quiz shows is how well read and clever people were say in the 80s compared to today. Bullseye for example was a real working class quiz show but those you went on were generally very bright.
They had a better education. Comprehensive schooling slows everything down.

When I was young we read books and got interested in things like History, Geography etc. You'd watch doco's on the telly because at certain times there wasn't much else on....Now it's all twitter, tic toc and Instagram ffs, and who said what.

It didn’t, it gave everyone an equal chance, education came from good Teachers, some pupils listened, some didn’t but at least you had the chance. I hated School but I know many kids at least got the chance to shine and make something of their lives.

Whilst true, even the best teacher can only go as quickly as their poorest student, unless they were sent to SEN measures, then it becomes as quick as the next poorest student.

My grandma was a teacher from 1947-83. She blames the comprehensive system and curriculum for dumbing down of the education system.

She may be wrong, but she’d still fight you and she’s now 95!

I'd watch Mastermind as a kid and would rarely get 2 questions right on the 2nd round of general knowledge....
The specialised subject round was always the complete works of Shakespeare or the English Civil War.
It became a ridiculous round when someone got on with The Sex Pistols as a specialised subject and a lad I know went on and did The Smiths. What next? One Direction?
I'd be pretty pissed off if I had studied the Complete works of Shakey only to lose to some bald fat aging punk rocker Who answered questions on a band that was around for 3 years and produced one album

Maybe in the 80s those in charge based those who got into the show purely for their knowledge while now they are looking for other things. But the level of general knowledge especially from those in their youth appears to be very poor from looking at modern quiz shows.

I was on Mastermind in the 70s at a time when most of the contestants were crusty old university professors or spinster teachers. At that time sport and pop music were specifically not allowed as specialist subjects. On the other hand one contestant originally chose orthopaedic bone cement as his specialist subject but was refused when the only reference the researchers could find on the subject was written by the contestant himself!
