The "which famous person died today" thread

I honestly thought he’d died years ago.

He’s still the only person I could name who’s from Carlisle.
For a town of its size there's very few famous people from there but George MacDonald Fraser who wrote the excellent "Flashman" series of novels is an exception.
The books featured the further adventures of the school bully from "Tom Brown's Schooldays" and was the inspiration for Lord Flashheart in Blackadder Goes Forth.

PAUL NATKIN
Jon Camp, bassist and vocalist for UK prog rock group Renaissance, has passed away at the age of 75 on December 13th. A key member of the band's classic lineup, Camp joined in 1972 and contributed to albums from Prologue (1972) to Time-Line (1983). He provided the male lead vocals on tracks like "Song Of Scheherazade" and occasionally played guitar.
Beyond Renaissance, Camp collaborated with Annie Haslam on her 1977 solo album Annie In Wonderland and worked with Roy Wood during the '70s and '80s. He also played on Robin George's debut album Dangerous Music and later co-founded Cathedrale, a pop/prog rock band whose sole album was released in 2017

At work and it’s all quiet so googled who was born in Carlisle.
Footballers Kevin Beattie, Matt Jenson, Geoff Twentymen and Peter Thompson.
And former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton and the broadcaster Melvyn Bragg.

Thank you for your service.

I would never have known the others, but now you say Melvyn Bragg, I’d forgotten knew that.

After he retired and became a journalist, City legend Ivor Broadis went to live in Carlisle.

Stoke City legend George Eastham has died.

He was also a member of England's 66 World Cup squad which now has only 3 survivors Geoff Hurst, Terry Paine and Ian Callaghan.
Eastham is an important figure in the history of football. In 1963 he sued Newcastle and won his freedom breaking the old retain and transfer system in English football. The start of freedom of contract.
RIP George Eastham.

For those who care about what you lot call (derisively) “rounders”, one of the greatest ever — Rickey Henderson — passed away yesterday.

I saw him play a lot, and he was a quote machine. Along with “Rickey don’t like it when Rickey can’t find Rickey’s limo” was his takedown of those American morons who bring Bible quote signs to sporting events.

A well-known one was John 3:16, to which Henderson supposedly said, “Rickey don’t want to hear about no John 3:16 when Rickey is hitting .330.” Legend on the basepaths; only his mouth was faster than his feet. RIP Rickey.
