I recall hearing he was very sick. Though I never cared for the Dolls, you can’t deny their influence.

Yes he put (or his family put) out a go fund me type appeal 2 weeks ago.
Cancer and his insurance ran out or something.
It’s funny the line in the Pistols songs about faggots.
I read a book on the Dolls and Sylvain Sylvain said they were at one gig in Long Island and he said the gig was interrupted all the time with blokes shouting out derogatory homophobic comments towards the band -
Sylvain said the band would simply laugh their backsides off as after the gig the band were fucking the females who were at the gig,

That is sad news. Early pioneer of female rap with The Sequence. I thought she was best in the group Vertical Hold but had some modern classics in her solo career. Amazing voice, RIP sister.

At the time they were definite outsiders.
They took loads of shit for the clothes they wore and make up etc. As I said a few posts up, the anti gay shit they faced was both predictable for its time but also comical as after the gigs the band members were taking their pick of the female admirers happy to spend some time with a Doll backstage! The joke was definitely on the male audience!

The thing is, they took the flack which meant that when Kiss, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and others came along as the NYD’s were coming to an end (under the guidance of one Malcolm McClaren) the public were now familiar with bands dressing up and wearing make up and this gave those bands following the Dolls a much easier ride and of course they achieved the success that was denied to the NYD.
It is often stated the Ramones / Television / Blondie etc started up the NY punk scene - The Dolls were the original NY punks

NYD were a big influence on the style and early sound of UK band Japan,whose lead singer chose the stage name David Sylvian ,based on the Dolls group member.

But their American manager kept all their money. And the debts spirald out of control.
