The "which famous person died today" thread

Deighton is wildly underrated the nine book Samson series is just perfection, I’d say if you struggled with Le Carré as physical books then listen to some of the audiobooks as they are top stuff especially the ones narrated by Michael Jayston.
I loved reading Deighton's trilogy of trilogies, and they coincided with my second visit to Berlin.

It was the strange endings to some of Le Carré's books that I found strange, like The Russia House, though I did enjoy The Spy, Who Came In From The Cold.

I’ve never read "Jackal," though I have seen the film.

And I agree that we’ve had some brilliant spy novelists, Len Deighton is another favourite of mine, though I could never get on with John Le Carré's books.
After editing/completing his father's last novel, Nick Harkaway has continued the Smiley series with Karla's Choice. Haven't read this particular book as yet but all his previous books have been superb.

A couple of weeks late…..did we miss it?

Farewell, E J Thribb
Your poems were bonkers
And a bit yonkers
And Barry Fantoni has passed away.
……..
…….

Barry Fantoni was a founder member of Private Eye. A brilliant comic writer, cartoonist and musician.

if you get bit ...just hate the bite."

"I've got a few reasons why I've got to maintain stability.
I've got into wanting people to hear my music.
I've got something I want people to hear because I know they'll like it.

They've gotta like it!
The songs I've been writing are the sort of things you have to like."

"I like my small camper. I just do not want to return to a fixed home.
I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving."

Unbelievable that Fredrick Forsyth wrote day of the jackal in 35 days..

also one of the great movies of all time - the modern day remake was a travesty. I read earlier Forsyth covered Biafra for the TV news - you have to be my age to remember that on the TV news nightly - something thats all too familiar now. That and the Odessa File made him one of my favourite authors along with Len Deighton - doubtless to do with the subject matter ( oh and also at 96 Len should get a Knighthood too - fucking Beckham whats all that about ) - anyway RIP Frederick - you knew your stuff.

RIP Sly Stone. Personal opinion, but for me, the greatest we've seen in our lifetimes. There's a Riot Going On is my favourite album, the sound of a genius just on the precipice of losing it, but the album caught him just before it happened. It's dark, twisted, fucked up and funky as it's ever been. Properly gutted to hear that tonight (coming out a gig in town)
