You seem to think that all that guns are designed for, is to kill or maim. I would suggest they are what is known as a force equaliser or force multiplier. For example, a woman who is attacked by a rapist can defend herself against an assailant who is much stronger than her.
For example, 4 robbers break into a 70 year old mans house. With a gun he can defend his life and property. Without it, much like the woman in the above example, they are unable to defend themselves and are subject to whatever the criminal chooses.
Example #3. Hitler and fascism rise in power and the world defends itself through legal force against violence. So if you enjoy the freedoms of your country, you should realise that freedom was fought for, and many died but ultimately we won, thanks to guns.

I agree entirely. That has nothing to do with the failure of America's gun policy in making ownership of them a 'force leveller'. It has demonstrably made it the opposite. Think of it like Sean Connery talking in The Untouchables, about you bring a knife, they bring a gun etc. There is nowhere to go once guns come into it, and once people feel culturally that they can have one, its obvious that its not going to end well. You mentioned burglars in your post, and people being able to defend themselves and their homes by having guns. I cannot get my head round that at all, and nobody hates burglars more than me I can you tell you that for fact.
