We came in for an inordinate amount of criticism and even derision when we began to spend big, and our new players were publicly castigated for being mercenaries.

Historically, we've always been a big club, and domestically few can match our support. We play in arguably the strongest, most competitive league in the world - the envy of the rest of Europe.

So can someone please explain to me how, besides the money, we have anything in common with PSG? How PSG aren't subjected to the same abuse that we're used to?

PSG are a competitive club in Europe's 4th or 5th best league.

What motives, besides money, does one of football's most highly rated defenders have in a move to PSG?

Thiago Silva could theoretically play for any of Europe's top clubs, he currently plays for one of them no less.

I know I'm open to claims of hypocrisy, but I'm baffled by this transfer, I really just don't get it, there is no logic to it. If Thiago Silva moves to PSG he'll be demonstrating an astonishing lack of professional ambition.

It is money and trophies, and that's the same for every club. Maybe a few like Barca and Athletic have ethnic and cultural draws.

Can't forget also that PSG is located in Paris, surely one of the most desirable places in Europe for a wealthy young man. It won't be a step down at all from Milan, he'll just have French rather than Italian supermodels throwing themselves at him. And if he has a wife, there probably aren't many women who would have a problem living in Paris.

Bollocks.

A Ligue 1 winners' medal vs a Serie A winners' medal?

... vs a La Liga winners' medal?

... vs a Premier League winners' medal?

French domestic football is frankly piss poor.

He probably wants to win the CL at this point. Obviously if he wants to move to PSG, he doesn't give a shit about the quality of the competition.

So his 38 game, 10 month domestic season is an irrelevance?

FWIW if PSG can't topple the European giants Montpellier for their domestic title, how on earth can overcoming the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the CL be a realistic ambition?

As I said this transfer makes no sense, it carries zero logic from a career perspective.

There's a strong belief that the French league could explode in the future (in a good way) but right now it is still down the list (6th on the coefficients list) and it's going to take some real effort from Lyon, Montpellier, etc., to stop it becoming a one-team league in the near future. PSG will be monsters soon and could be CL contenders in a few years. But this is a bit of strange move for Silva as he's 28 and this may be his last big move but I have a feeling he may have been pushed as he loves Milan and has said repeatedly he wants to stay and be the captain.

That's what this whole T.Silva transfer saga is all about but most people don't get it . PSG are building a team that could win the UCL in some years and players like Thiago Silva would be very important for ambitious teams . Its not about his age , its about the quality he brings to the team . We already have a team that can push for the UCL and compared to PSG , we are in a better position to achieve that dream but Thiago Silva might just be one of the 2 remaining pieces of the puzzle (a midfielder to cover for yaya being the final piece ) . He is currently rated as the best defender in the world right now so its kind of ridiculous when i see people say he isn't worth the price , He is 28 Not 33 for crying out loud and would be the perfect defensive partner / cover for Kompany . What makes it even more ridiculous is that most of the people who think Thiago silva is too old to join the team would rather have us buy a 30 year old RVP.

RVP was 29 last week. Take your point , although CBs generally play at the top level longer than strikers.................

Actually he's still 28.

Does FFP not count for French sides due to Platini being a frog ?, 20m for Levezzi too ?

We should be extremely grateful for the emergence of PSG. They've either killed FFP or at least severely delayed any kind of serious enforcement of it. Platini will not sanction them, and while he doesn't sanction them he can't sanction anybody else relevant either.

MCFC and Chelsea are certainly getting in the mood to challenge FFP through the courts because it seems obvious that Chelsea in are NOT going to let up on spending and I think Sheik Mansour has a few tricks up his sleeve to make Platini & Co think hard about imposing sanctions.
I particularly like the idea of the 'Golden Ticket' @ £100m...... including luxury box, return private jet flights from anywhere in the world, Rolls Royce Limo transfer to and from Airport at start & finish of the trip................etc etc.
Kerching goes the MCFC cash register in the ticket office!

Its amazing - we don't here anything from Bayern - Platini etc re- PSG.

If i were city I'd be asking UEFA what the score was re- PSG and European competitions because they have cat in hells chance of making FFP

Mancini has already publically ruled out a move for Chiellini.

Chiellini? I thought about him last year, not now. There are many other options,

I know you can't always trust everything managers say about transfer targets or what they are reported to have said. What I think we are after is a footballing centre-half in the role of Lucio not a more aggressive version of Robert Huth (incidentally he's possibly available from Stoke as he has 12 months left on his contract and so far has turned down a new contract offer from Stoke).

By saying this i'm probably placing myself in the line of fire here LOL but i think Huth could add a little to the team , He would save LOTS of money if we can get him on a free transfer Plus he is also 27 (That's really hard to believe as i have always thought he is in his mid 30's)

I wasn't suggesting we go for Huth. I was comparing Chiellini to Huth.

Don't you start as well!

He's just a fuckin thug,a real loathsome dirty bastard who i wouldn't want anywhere near our club.

He may well be cheapish but if we are going down the root of mediocracy, several other names would be before his.

Anyway,back on topic,please!!

but you'll have to admit that if we can get huth on a free transfer / pay as you play deal he could provide a decent cover for kompany / lescott.
Huth left Chelsea. Maybe they made a mistake, but I don't think so. He's a very tough defender who wont be beaten in the air, but he's a little short of what we need. I prefer our existing options. If we are after players I think they will be either young talented players who will improve or fight for a place in the squad (unlike star names like Hazard) or players who are better than what we already have. Huth doesn't fall into either category

Thiago Silva is also 27 now and would be 28 in September . But As much as i would love to see him at City , it looks like PSG already have this deal wrapped up . We had better turn our attention to Chellini Or Vertonghen.
Didnt Danamy recently say the Belgian was heading to Spurs regardless of the managerial situation?
