Thin Lizzy

I get the impression that they were underrated by people who weren't fans of them. You never seem to see them getting mentioned when people talk about "legendary bands". Excellent band. And Phil liked to live the rock n' roll lifestyle!
I liked them on a sort of 'greatest hits' level as a kid, but I prefer their earlier albums now.

One of my interests as regards pop/ rock history is serious violence , criminality , corruption , murder etc
Which obviously there's been quite a lot of
I was unaware of this. Brian Robertson, in 1976, nearly killed by someone from Gonzalez who in 1979 had a hit with Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet

I assume you must know the story of Sweet lead singer, Brian Connolly? Targeted in a night club, for chatting up or looking at a girl in there, who's boyfriend took exception, and he and mates jumped him outside. They knew full well who he was, and one deliberately stamped on his throat.

I didn’t know that story. Very sad what happened with him generally though.

I still count myself as a fan of the band. Never saw them with BC; did see the three piece version with Scott, Tucker & Priest.

Did Taggart get involved in that investigation?

Yes, it was catalyst for his drinking more, and the eventual firing from the band. Sweet were invited by The Who to join them at their upcoming all day show at Charlton football stadium.
It was seen by the band as a great chance to be seen by a large amount of rock fans, and getting them more accepted as a hard rock band. Following his attack, they were forced to withdraw from it. BC's voice was never quite the same afterwards, (and why Steve Priest did more lead vocals on albums) some of the band blamed him for being out partying before such an important gig. It drove a wedge between them, and Brian turned to the drink. And to where he sadly ended up.

I never got to see them with him, but also saw them as a three piece. (At the Royal Court in Liverpool 1981) Was good, but not the same without him. Have seen Andy Scott's version many times, and they do the songs justice.

Brian Connolly Junior is a singer on cruise ships (and toured last year in the Get It On show) and recently performed with a band in Germany called Son Of Sweet.

Phil’s passing was probably the first musician that struck me as someone I would miss, I remember it being a bit of a shock as he was seemingly getting over his addictions if I recall correctly.

Such a unique voice, instantly recognisable.

That said, I only really knew the Jailbreak album, a greatest hits and one of the live albums. I probably followed Gary Moore and Snowy White more in the eighties and got into the blues rock and people like Clapton, early Fleetwood Mac and Led Zepp as a result.

So I’ve been catching up over the last few days thanks to Spotify.

They’re hard to pigeon hole in any specific genre. Sometimes blues, sometimes hard rock, glam rock or just plain pop. They often sound quite raw in some of the songs, maybe Phil wasn’t always quite up to doing many takes so they went with what they had. However I like that sound on albums and their live recordings are quality.

I just recall them being unfashionable really by the time I first got to them, and it’s a pity Phil didn’t survive his excesses to be able to come back and prove the longevity of this genre of music like other bands have been able to do.

On the topic of Lizzy had a chat about live albums today. Some belters down the years (all the worlds a stage, live at Leeds, if you want blood) and for me Live and Dangerous stands right at the top of the tree. Absolutely incredible
Great post.
My favourite album ever

Lots of really interesting stuff on this thread. The story of Brian Robertson would have fitted the rock history thread perfectly.

Mosy of his issues dated back to that incident and struggles with his voice.Saw them last year with Paul Manzi, and they were a good fun night out, but to be honest I still like to see Manzi back doing new stuff like Arena and Cats in Space, think he's a bit wasted in Sweet as good as he and they are, but suppose Sweet pays better.

Just booked to see them at Holmfirth in December. The legend that is John Otway is supporting them. Brilliant.

Leslie Crowther wasn’t too happy, when Phil was shagging his daughter, Caroline, apparently.

Me and the wife were trying to decide on a name for our 2nd daughter who was born in July 1983.
And then one day ,as I was driving from Bolton to Manchester , Sarah came on the radio, and I decided that was the name for her.
And I believe that Phil and Caroline's daughter is also called Sarah.
That is also a brilliant song, particularly the video and the interaction between Phil and Scott Gorham.
Phil wrote Sarah, about his daughter, when she was a new-born.
