Things to do in Bath (the city....)

If you are expecting shops then your in for a shock most are boarded up ! If you want chain coffee shops it seems a new one opens every week. Bath is beautiful in parts, but it is in a bit of disrepair these days .Around the Guildhall the council keeps its own area clean deploying street sweeper machines to clean the pavements, unfortunately thats as far as they go though ! Weekends are hen and stag night central as well . i am a Bathonian born and bred and the City could do with some TLC to be honest .

What is it with Oxford!
I've heard mixed reports and I was inches away from booking this trip to Oxford (but couldn't' find anything approaching decent accommodation).

Still plan to visit though. Looks like there's some amazing things to see and visit. A natural history museum alsmot on par with the one in London?

Blimey.
This thread has escalated rather quickly!

I've visited York quite a few times over the years and that seems to have gotten better for the most part, although some parts (certainly in the evening and on a Saturday) suggest a quick exit to the hotel might be better.
But that's probably applicable to the majority of UK cities.

The Ashmolean is a wonderful world class museum, really hands on, and much better than Cambridge's flagship Fitzwilliam. Cambridge has far better pubs, mind.

I'm in an industry that's related to tourism and I visit Bath every four or five weeks and was there last week
Honestly, I really don't see the appeal

I do good business in Bath as I do in Oxford and York. I despise the latter two and much prefer Cambridge

Roman baths, best in the evening. Bath Abbey. The Royal crescent. Good shops. River is lovely. Ghost walk is funny as fuck. Some nice pubs. Thermal bath spa, basically a roof top heated pool with great views. Sally Lunns eaterie. Pulteney Bridge.

Glastonbury and Wookey Hole are not far away.
Do you remember when you ended up in the Great Bath during gore Roman Baths tour?

Reason I ask is it states allows 90 mins plus for the tour and the torches are lit at 6pm.
I'm also booking the Ghost Tour for 8pm, but could do with a rest in between. If I book for 5 (or 5:30) and the tour finished at the Great Bath (as it looks like it's a one way system (a la Ikea!) then we'll get to see the torches lit.
Don't really want to book later as the Ghost Tour is 90 mins+ too so potentially tiring for my lad.

Thanks!

I drive v closer to Cambridge on trips to Norfolk and that's another place I really need to spend a weekend in.

I should really start ticking these places off, visiting wise.

Interesting to read that, my sons put Bath down as his first choice for uni, had a really good feel about the campus and the place too. He did wonder about the nightlife aspect of it as he likes to go to gigs a lot but thought the same thing about Bristol not being far away.

Selfishly, I wanted him to choose it as we’re looking forward to visiting if he does go there!
My daughter has just finished 1st year at Bath Uni, if you need any advice just drop me a line.

She absolutely adores the place and had an awesome year.

We were there a few nights so the ghost tour was another evening.

According to the missus we did the 7pm tour and the bath area was near the end. I'd book for 5.30. We were out in an hour as you go at your own pace.
