Things you refuse to call by their new name

I believe the sandwich was originally the creation of the Earl of Sandwich but in a complete reversal to the original post I actually do use its new name - all hail THE BUTTY

So he could continue playing poker whilst eating his tea, so goes the story at least.

Stretford will be a town in Trafford, like Sale, Altrincham etc.

Gets even more confusing with Bury, Oldham etc that are towns within the borough of the same name...

It’s a minefield. Same in Salford, they have little road signs that say what part of Salford you’re entering. Irlam- Salford. Eccles- Salford. etc.

And there’s one outside Sainsbury’s just before the hospital that says, Salford- Salford. My little brain can’t compute.

Salford - Salford - so shite they named it twice?

Manchester is a city, along with Salford, but both are also boroughs of Greater Manchester. The swamp is in the borough of Trafford, not the borough of Manchester.

As for nobody puts Trafford in their address, you've not met my missus, but then she also puts Cheshire, so she either thinks it's 1973 or she's trying to be posh.

Don’t know where you live but a lot of people in Altrincham and Hale insist they live in Cheshire and not Greater Manchester like they actually do. But the reason for that, apart from wanting to be posh, is that they were actually told back in ‘74 and to this day as far as I know, to continue using Cheshire in their address as it would make it easier for the post office to get their mail sent to the right delivery office.

Sale, but some websites show it as Cheshire. I always put Manchester just to annoy her

They were probably told the same as Alti back at the time, to keep using Cheshire, even though it no longer was.

I think it was because although postcodes obviously existed, people didn’t really use them that much back in those days. So people were told to keep using their old addresses to help keep the mail going to where it should be going.
