Sam. said:As I said in a different thread, De Jong's influence on our football last season has been greatly exaggerated since he left. He played less that half of our Premier League games last season and the ones he did play, he wasn't exactly sublime.
We offered him a contract but he turned it down because he wanted consistent first team football and he wasn't going to get that at City.
We didn't need to sell him. So he turned down the contract offer. We only got 5 mil for him. SHould have let him finish out his contract and walk at the end. Instead we wasted 35 mil to replace him. Neither one is better player than NJD and one is injured 80% of the time. THe issue isn't that NDJ was the greatest player. It's that neither of the replacements are as good and the team 35 cost the team 35 mil that they will never recoup. Restricting what the team will be able to do in the future.
NDJ didn't play every game but he was a great clubhouse guy and this team is sorely missing that team spirit this year. He kept the club loose. That stuff is important and sometimes is overlooked.
