Thomas Tuchel | England Manager

2 finals and a semi final , complete failure.
And what a who's who of teams he ran through.

Slovakia, Switzerland and a mediocre Dutch side....predictably beaten by Spain.

Senegal...predictably beaten by France.

At home..the worst German side in 50 years, Ukraine, and Denmark after their best player died on the pitch ...predictably beaten by Italy.

Columbia, Sweden...predictably beaten by Croatia.

I'm sensing a pattern.

Well it isn't incorrect. I just picked a random year - 1989 - and checked England's results. From the beginning of the season to December, there were 4 international breaks. England played 2 qualifiers and 2 friendly matches.

We've always had these international breaks. They were likely in place when you first got into football. The Nations League has replaced friendlies. They are largely useless but add to a country's ranking (so affect chances of qualification) and also give a back door route into tournaments.

What's changed is football fans' perspectives on international football. I'm far less excited about non tournament England matches now than I was when I was 11 in 1989 but I don't piss and moan about it every time an international break comes along because it's a worthless exercise. I can't change them and they're not going away.

Football players want to represent their countries. We get to watch those players play for our clubs an enormous amount more than they play for their country.

As for making money for the FA and UEFA, everyone in football is there to make more and more money. City are as guilty as anyone of this as this week's news on season tickets shows. It's blinkered to complain about one element of money being made because you don't particularly like it.
They weren't around when I got into football.
Teams would play league games on a Saturday and internationals during the season would be midweek and it would be back to league games the following weekend.
The press would carry stories of Ramsey, Revie, Greenwood and possibly even Sir Joe, phoning club managers after the Saturday games to check on any injuries.

I’m one of those who thinks international football should be our best against their best. That’s the entire point of international football. We don’t draft in Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri to play in midfield because we haven’t got a decent defensive mid or truly creative mid in the squad. We go with what we’ve got with the English lads.

And it should be the same with the manager. He should always be English. It should never have been Sven, never have been Capello and it shouldn’t be Tuchel.

However, until we address the problem we have in England/English football with regards to being bereft of a talent pool of English coaches, I can see why we’d look for a foreign coach.

It costs £3,645 to enrol on an UEFA A Licence course in England and unbelievably costs £9,890 to complete the UEFA Pro Licence. There are also very limited spaces to do the Licences at St George’s Park each year.

That’s why we only have less than 1,800 qualified English coaches.

In Spain they have 15,000+ qualified coaches!

That’s because it costs €960 and €1,070 for the same Licences, respectively.

Something needs to change in England.

But good luck to Tuchel, I hope he does well.
I've nothing against Tuchel but it just doesn't feel right in the international football world.
Would Germany hire an English manager to manage their team? Absolutely no chance .
All the successful international teams have had managers from their own country, we've tried this route before without any success. I'm sure we've got an English manager who can bring us success if given the chance.
Tuchels main success was beating us 1-0 in the champions league final when Pep didn't quite get his tactics right.
We had an off night against a team that finished 19 points behind us in the league.
We need a manager that's not just there for the money but is there for national pride.

I have no problem with appointing Tuchel at all.
Carsley is clearly a top coach BUT he hated the media conferences and, whether we like it or not, it's a vital part of the job.
It's fine when you're winning to be quiet, inconsistent with responses etc... but the press will be gunning for you if you lose.
I actually gave him credit for trying something different against Greece, but his comment about going back to the U21s was ill-judged.

'Listen Mate Ange' has had some very indifferent results at Spurs but he's a media darling because he's rent-a-quote.
That only works so long but it does buy a manager time.

However, I'm really surprised they didn't talk to Eddie Howe. That doesn't reflect well on the FA and their vision for coaches. Howe is a strong candidate. He's on mega money at Newcastle (a lot more than the England manager gets, apparently). But he's not as secure after Staveley and her husband left from what people are saying. Maybe Ashworth wants him at OT!!!!

IMO they clearly want Pep and I wonder if they are targeting him after the next World Cup.

Possibly not amongst fans, but many in the media who condemned Tuchel's appointment were celebrating Weigman's success a few years ago.
Cannot understand what all the fuss is about with Tuchel being German ?
England have had Capello & Sven previously - so a foreign coach is nothing new.
A few top clubs have had German players or coaches, who have been really popular with the fans e.g. Uwe, Bert, Klinsmann, even Klopp.
Only Eddie Howe or Graham Potter can currently be considered as "good" English coaches ?
So who should have the English F.A. appointed ?

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest Pep wouldn't be a great success if he managed the England team.
His strength is coming up with complex systems and tactics, and it takes time to drill these into a squad of players. He wouldn't have that time as England manager during international breaks. - Even having the squad for five weeks before a tournament might not be long enough. He also likes squad stability over a few seasons, which would not be possible in international football.
His best point would be ignoring calls to pick the latest over-hyped rag Muppet, and telling the media exactly why he'd ignored those calls.

Johnny Boulders will be Tommy's new captain.

Nailed on Declan Rice I reckon.

Stones is too injury prone now and I think it would be wise not to start building a defense around him despite him being England's best central defender.

Big 6 months for Stones in my opinion, both for club and country. His body seems to be going through a really difficult time as of the last 12 months or so.

You either win a trophy or don't. I suppose he got unlucky in only playing average teams up until he didn't and lost.

The Frank Bruno of football, you can't just punch fat doormen all your career. You eventually meet someone half decent.

It's a knockout.
