Your position makes no sense. Surely if Barcelona and united are going down the marquee route, that's even more reason to be excited about the CFA, as it will further differentiate us from them, not, as you suggest, make us morph into them.

The sponsorship is a necessary evil, I'm afraid, but at least it's being put to productive use.
No disagree barca are always held up as the role model .I guess them and the rags just struck lucky and had a good bunch come through together. What makes you think nice facilities will help us bring through better players ? Isn't it down to better scouting ie Southampton and better coaching ?
Of course if you want the best you pay for it with more sponsorship but when the rags get a noodle sponser we criticise but we put a sign on a bridge and have a wankathon

i found that teams had a 'period' of talented youngsters in their history coming through the ranks and then a 'period' of nothing but purchases from other clubs. Seems to be a cycle for it. Everyone is talking about the Southampton Academy, but will they in 10 years ... who knows?

Think the plan is with these facilities is on the Ajax model, to create a sustained line of talent and not the odd 'period' of talent.

Plus, will make us competitive with the clubs that can offer the best development when attracting kids (and their parents). Like or not, the likes of Messi and Ronaldo went to clubs with a pedigree of developing talented players, now City have the facilities, structure and opportunity to attract and develop the next generation of Messi's, Ronaldo's and Edgehill's
If you were the father of a talented footballing son would you
A let the facilities influence you and probably never make the first team ?
B go to somewhere say villa and if your good enough play first team football
C go to somewhere like Crewe and play and come up the leagues that way ?

It's never that simple though, none of those options guarantee success. I believe the initial contact with a club, and what they offer is very important. City's academy offering top level coaching, accommodation, education in fact full pastoral care must be a huge pull. The shop window effect of a successful academy means that those who are released for whatever reason will find another club, easier, Sometimes a kid is let go because their path is blocked by a 'glut' of outstanding talent in their position, nobody's fault, just bad luck. The fact that they were considered good enough to join the academy will always be a 'plus' on their c.v.

Agreed not that simple.you have gone for A.interesting I think I would maybe go for B villa where there may be a chance of first team football and if I wasn't good enough the name villa on my CV would probably get me a trial at most championship sized clubs ?

I think the answer to that question rests as much with the disposition of the father, as with the talent of the son. Regrettably many fathers let their hearts rule their heads when they have sons with prodigious footballing talent. I think my dad would have been a fucking nightmare if I'd been remotely good enough to play professional football. People who reach the top of professional sport have my full admiration, as it's a path with many, many obstacles.

For me,I would have to let my son have a crack at "A",if you don't give it a go you may later regret it.
Even if there was no 1st team opportunity,he would of worked with some of the best coaches around that would no doubt improve his game and stand him in good stead for a smaller club......IMO.

So as we are saying A is the best he would be the best educated best coached but probably not make the first team as we are at cutting edge, so would probably end up at a B club like villa ?

You have a son or daughter who is good at mathematics.

At the age of 10 their talent at maths has been noticed and you have serious thinking to doto either

a) stay at the comp where local fame and stardom are guaranteed but there may not be much else and where teachers will help keep their feet on the ground.

b) Take the offer from a selective school where good teachers will develop the talent and although one of many talented mathematicians the chance of university is pretty obvious

c) Accept the fully funded education at one of the worlds top 4 establishments where the teaching is second to none and if they work hard and apply their knowledge a top university followed by any choice of jobs is more or less certain.

As well as that the place on offer includes a guarantee that the child will be developed as a good person as well as a great mathematician and if their talent was precocious but not long lasting they can still go on to any other job they feel comfortable with.

Take the word football out of the debate and its obvious where you would send your kid.
