You have a son or daughter who is good at mathematics.

At the age of 10 their talent at maths has been noticed and you have serious thinking to doto either

a) stay at the comp where local fame and stardom are guaranteed but there may not be much else and where teachers will help keep their feet on the ground.

b) Take the offer from a selective school where good teachers will develop the talent and although one of many talented mathematicians the chance of university is pretty obvious

c) Accept the fully funded education at one of the worlds top 4 establishments where the teaching is second to none and if they work hard and apply their knowledge a top university followed by any choice of jobs is more or less certain.

As well as that the place on offer includes a guarantee that the child will be developed as a good person as well as a great mathematician and if their talent was precocious but not long lasting they can still go on to any other job they feel comfortable with.

Take the word football out of the debate and its obvious where you would send your kid.

Very well put.

if i was a father of a talented youngster i would want him to go to a club where he would get the best education both on and off the field, it wouldnt be by your contrived a. b. c.
So as we are saying A is the best he would be the best educated best coached but probably not make the first team as we are at cutting edge, so would probably end up at a B club like villa ?

Possibly,not probably,just my opinion mate.
I don't know either .just wandering why people are getting so excited by new pitches showers dressing room etc .I personally think we will probably produce a lot of mid prem quality players that will pay for the facilities and just maybe hit the jackpot with a messi type gem.soi guess it good be worth the outlay in the long run ?

A 5 year contract at a B club like Villa would probably make him a millionaire, not bad eh!

I see what you are saying but not sure you can compare .you would get a job anywhere with good maths but there are probably no more than 10 ? Elite homegrown footballers would you take the risk of failure and the side effect s or play it safer and go to a villa style club with the optoion of ending up at the top via a different route.I guess the most talented either way stand the most chance but does a gem at city playing eds go further than villas gem playing prem football who city may buy anyway ?

So,given time, are you saying that one of our youth players will provide a proof for P versus NP?

No disagree barca are always held up as the role model .I guess them and the rags just struck lucky and had a good bunch come through together. What makes you think nice facilities will help us bring through better players ? Isn't it down to better scouting ie Southampton and better coaching ?
Of course if you want the best you pay for it with more sponsorship but when the rags get a noodle sponser we criticise but we put a sign on a bridge and have a wankathon

i found that teams had a 'period' of talented youngsters in their history coming through the ranks and then a 'period' of nothing but purchases from other clubs. Seems to be a cycle for it. Everyone is talking about the Southampton Academy, but will they in 10 years ... who knows?

Think the plan is with these facilities is on the Ajax model, to create a sustained line of talent and not the odd 'period' of talent.

Plus, will make us competitive with the clubs that can offer the best development when attracting kids (and their parents). Like or not, the likes of Messi and Ronaldo went to clubs with a pedigree of developing talented players, now City have the facilities, structure and opportunity to attract and develop the next generation of Messi's, Ronaldo's and Edgehill's
If you were the father of a talented footballing son would you
A let the facilities influence you and probably never make the first team ?
B go to somewhere say villa and if your good enough play first team football
C go to somewhere like Crewe and play and come up the leagues that way ?

Not that it makes any of these decisions correct but it seems a number of current and ex-pros (Darren Fletcher, Van Pissflap, one of the Nevilles, Andy Cole, Kevin Campbell to name but a few) decided A is the best choice for their kids.
