Today's shooting in America thread

No I mean you don't have a single concern for how unjust laws affect people in countries around the world.

Anti-lgbt laws are alright?

This thread isn't just gloating is it?

I think it took that direction because of the frequency that mass shootings happen and the collective shoulder shrugging that happens in response.

No meaningful action to stop kindergartens being shot up like the O. K. Corral.
It's almost like some on here revel in mass shootings and can't wait for the next one to post about.

Gun shops will be busy today
It’s Christmas! They’re always busy this time of year!

This 15 yr old’s father only bought the gun 4 days ago…do the maths!

Black Friday Special???

This shooting isn’t going to change anything. It’s not even going to count as a “mass murder,” because that threshold is 4 deaths.

Hate to spoil your fun, but no-one cares what Brits have to say about the US Constitutional Right to Bear Arms, or the deaths that come from it. NO-ONE!

It’s great that you have this outlet to vent your outrage, but don’t get bent out of shape if no-one gives a damn about your screaming into the abyss.

It's something you've grown up with though.

In my lifetime I can remember 2 mass shootings that changed the gun laws in the UK: Hungerford (1987) and Dunblane (1996); 17 and 18 deaths respectively.

After Hungerford semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns were banned, and after Dunblane all privately owned handguns were banned.

Since Dunblain I can only remember 3 events considered mass shootings (excluding NI). I understand the USA is vastly different to the UK, but please forgive us that us Brit's just don't understand your BONKERS gun laws.

It's not something they've grown up with, that's the thing.

Most of this stuff is post-virginia techand a result of the Republicans ending the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

The active shooter drills from Kindergarten up, the Kevlar plates in school backpacks, armed police patrolling schools, teachers being taught special codewords to alert them to a shooter over the intercom or every door having special deadbolts....that's all come in the last 10-15 years.

I meant guns and gun culture, not mass shootings.

Again that's not true either, gun culture in America today is something from the last 30 years.

Over that period the % of people who own guns has almost halved, and the number of guns per person has doubled.

It's gone from loads of people having an old service weapon or hunting rifle in the garage to a minority of gun nuts having huge caches of weapons.

The proliferation of open carry laws is in the last 10 years.

Scalia changed the interpretation of the 2nd amendment in 2008.

Up til the 1980's, the NRA was like the firearm equivalent of the caravan club. They were buy scouts who encouraged education, and then they got radicalised and turned into a lobby for absolutely unrestricted access to guns.

Never forget 70% of Americans want tighter gun controls. The majority don't want it to be like this.

Exactly this - BONKERS!!!

We in the UK tightened up our gun laws, and in the USA they pretty much did the opposite because of lobbying predominantly for financial gain.
