It's often stated that the ONLY way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, but as you say what has just transpired in Texas has blown that stupid idea out of the water.

The smart move would be to stop bad guys getting guns in the first place. And yes, you are never going to stop a determined criminal or someone intending to do harm from obtaining an illegal weapon, but if you remove the readily available supply of military grade weapons and ammunition from people who really shouldn't be anywhere near them then you are going to have a huge reduction in these kinds of events.

The problem with this kind of reporting is that it shift focus from the actual problem which is why the actual f*ck is it considered perfectly acceptable that anyone, let alone an 18 year old kid can legally buy and possess military grade weapons and ammunition?
