Today's shooting in America thread

Fair enough but even if they don't bow down to them they're as inept against them as their predecessors, they all make good points when such incidents occur but concrete action is beyond them
I think you just don’t understand the political environment and how 2A would get repealed.

If I were King for the day, there would be no 2A…and Americans would point to the irony of that statement and why it was written in the first place!

The modern problem is that firearms’ technology and availability, in a society that has changed immeasurably since 2A was written, has outpaced the political mentality that The Constitution was written TO BE a “living, breathing document to be updated through the Amendment process.” Some people are still strict constructionists, even though the Amendment process proves this is false!

American once managed to ban alcohol. It didn’t STOP alcohol consumption, it just drove it underground, created a black market, and made it criminal. It was eventually repealed!

Many people see parallels to guns, and wonder how we couldn’t have the collective will to save American children from slaughter today.

It is an indictment of the current politics in America. Believe me, if the Presidency, the Senate AND the House, plus all the Governorships were Democratic, the Second Amendment could STILL not be repealed, because SCOTUS would rule it unconstitutional UNTIL it went through the entire Amendment process!

We can’t even pass an EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT (ERA), even though the required number of States have agreed to it, because the time limit ran out! I shit you not!

There is often very little prudence to be found in American jurisprudence, and much of it revolves around hot button issues like taxes, abortion and guns…all third rail political issues here.

Wow, didn't expect him to be an experienced doctor.

I wouldn't trust that bloke to leave him alone with a box of Duplo because of the risk he takes his eye out or inserts a brick up/down one of his holes.

No, it’s not a comedy skit!

If you knew anything about prohibition though you’d know that it permanently changed American drinking habits which fell to 30% of their pre-prohibition levels after 1920, and while that rebounded in the last 100 years, consumption is still about 60% of what it was pre-prohibition.

But, we are talking about an ABOLITION…PERMANENTLY of public gun ownership in America, not returning to 30-60% of pre-abolition guns after a period of prohibition.

Almost every gun owner could point to about 40% of the population they think shouldn’t have guns!

The point is that it doesn't have to be permanent to have a permanent effect.

If future generations get bored of not slaughtering their children, you can bring back whatever is banned.

Besides it's all really a non-point because no one is arguing for the complete ban of all guns, the only thing that needs banning is Assault rifles, ie any civilian derivitive of a military assault rifle with a magazine capacity over 15. Keep your hunting rifles and your handguns and your shotguns (which are a much better home defence weapon anyway).

America has gone way too far to get rid of guns. People using Australia as some example is way off the mark

Hanging the cunts making money out of this would be a good start but would never happen

An outright ban, which is the declared wish of millions, is never going to be possible, whereas an immediate ban on owning an automatic weapon though almost impossible, is more achievable but even then would take years, and not prevent such atrocities in the meantime. Armed security at schools may have to be considered, as the only pragmatic solution to the increasing frequency of the attacks, unless an alternative can be deployed urgently. A ban would not have a discernable effect, too many guns already out there. To be effective, a law has to be enforcible, otherwise it is just a badge to be used in political posturing at elections, and the police have to be onside to impliment it. Partygate is what happens when they aren't.

The NY Post is reporting that not only did the police wait outside for 40 minutes without confronting the gunman, not only did they stop parents from going in to save their children, some police went inside, got their kids and came out without trying to save more or confronting the shooter.

And, if you tolerate this, then your children will be next...

These last five years has cemented my view that America is a rogue state. A culture being driven back by religious fundamentalism. A rise in extreme right ideology. It has never been a democracy with the Electoral College, voter suppression and discrimination abound. We are again in a situation where you know nothing will change. They will go on claiming freedom and are willing to sacrifice their children’s lives, or, other people’s children. A truly horrendous society where it’s people are conditioned to believe they are the greatest nation ever, the truth is they are an abomination. No health care for all, education an utter joke, constantly at war since 1776. Racism endemic and getting worse and 76m voted a second term for Trump. Game over.
