Tokyo 2020 Olympics/Paralympics

Low key day today imho as a viewer, the calm before the storm.

Athletics starts at 1am tonight, and Team GB (aka City) in the footy 1/4 final at 10am tomorrow.
Bring it.

Honestly the half assed coverage of the Olympics has really killed the interest this time around.

What are we 6 days in now? Yet there's less posts on here for the whole Olympics than the British Grand Prix a few weeks back.

Fuck the IOC for going straight to Discovery, selling the coverage and hiding all the minor sports behind a pay wall.

With the popular sports like football, tennis etc you can see how they get away with putting them on pay TV because the demand for them is still big.

But think of all the minor sports that get their one chance every 4 years with the Olympics to showcase their sport to a much larger audience than they normally get. How are kids meant to be inspired by the Olympics when they can't watch most of the events?
I agree with you here, although given how much the BBC love athletics I expect Track and Field to get huge coverage.

Also that was a damn controversial Grand Prix. There would have been 10x the number of posts if there were more Verstappen supporters on here!

What's sad about someone who bottled it because she scored her lowest score in an event? It's like Ederson letting in three goals in the first half and refusing to play the second.
I take it you were equally as scathing of Tyson Fury during his mental health issues?

Yeah I think the Olympics have made the mistake of thinking that their event is a much bigger draw than it is. It's a event for casual sports fans. The sort of people who won't pay money to watch it. I can't imagine the sponsors will be too happy if their logo starts to get placed behind a paywall when previously it was being viewed by billions.

What's that Dressage crap all about?...apparently now Charlotte Dujardin is our most decorated female Olympic Athlete ....Athlete? Laura Kenny sweated her arse off winning 4 golds in the velodrome, she's an athlete ... Basically Charlotte sat on a well combed horse while it did an impression of Michael Flatley.

If it’s for casual sports fans, they’ll be more than happy with one bbc channel broadcasting 24 hours a day coverage, and the other - their flagship channel - showing about what, 20 hours a day? I think sponsors might be ok with that.

The upset over the Eurosport coverage is a red herring here for me. Until quite recently there was none of this multi channel coverage anyway.

We’re great at sports where you sit down aren’t we? ;-)

So much potential today, hopefully not a day of near misses. We have a chance of medals in the rowing, also the swimming; Luke Greenbank and Duncan Scott are chasing gold in their finals. The BMX racers are going well. GB's football team has a chance at making the semis. 2 trampoline gymnasts in a field of only 16 athletes makes me think we have a chance there too.

Plus the athletics starts!

Also it has to be said, although there's no sailing medal races today, we've a shit tonne of medals lined up including a couple of golds.

Of course, but let's think what the ultimate aim is here for these big American streaming platforms. They will definitely want exclusive coverage when the next bidding war comes around. And what will happen to the prices if none of the events are available on free-to-air TV? If that happens, the Olympics will be finished as an event that the whole country gets behind. Wasn't it the case in America in 2012 that NBC didn't even show the 100m final live, because they wanted to put on at prime time?

Also plenty of things didn't exist until recently. But if we've had it for the past two Olympics, you can't say that people are wrong to be upset at it being taken away. In future, how much support will there be to put public money into making a free TV programme for a big American corporation? All of the athletes compete for free, with the exception of some token prize money for the medallists. Most of their training worldwide is paid for by government funding. All of the infrastructure and actual organisation of the games is paid for by the host nation out of public money. How many people will want to pay for all of that if they don't get to watch it?

But they will, just not every minute of every event.
I may need to be corrected on this but I think it’s 380 hours protected by UK law for free to air, so the ultimate aim or not of the American tv networks is irrelevant in the UK I’d say. I don’t think the current bbc level of coverage is short changing the licence fee payers tbh.

I appreciate prices can rise in anything, including the licence fee, but BBC is currently what £11 a month, sky Sports £25 a month but the Eurosport app cost me &19.99, for 12 months, £1.66 a month.
