Top Four or final?

I still have hope we come 3rd.

I expect West Ham to beat Arsenal, us to beat West Brom.

That leaves us 1 point behind them and with a game at the Etihad coming up. I know our record vs. the top half is awful, but I maintain belief this team have got one more big domestic performance in them, and it's a completely different game with Kev, Kompany and Sterling all expected back by then.

5th would do untold damage and set us back ages, just at the wrong time with Pep arriving. So tempting though a CL final might be, we MUST focus on 4th or better in the league. I am not sure Manuel will agree though.

id have to say 4th, pretty much means we finish above United and they miss out and I'm confident we can reach a final in 3 years under Pep and new signings
so 4th for me

This, and it also keeps the rags out of CL so all the more merriment and piss taking to be had.

Can't we have both?

But realistically the chance of us winning the CL this year is very slim. Wolfsburg would probably progress at the expense of Real, but Bayern and Barca would likely get to the semis at the end. Even if by some miracles Benfica and Atleti won in the second leg, they are not exactly easy opponents (particularly if the Atleti attack turns up).

So a top three finish would be great (having to play qualifiers would be a nuisance).

Final all day long. Whether or not we finish in the top 4 won't have a huge impact on our transfer business this summer. And in a one off final we can beat anyone. Even Barca if we have our best players for. Big if.

Anyway FWIW there's no reason we can't do both.

As I stated in another thread some time ago IMO we will win CL. League position is therefore irrelevant.People knocking Pellars will be eating humble pie. :-)

Win the CL, anyone saying we are incapable are useless (not saying anyone has either), we can win the fucker.
I don't just mean by fluke, on our day we can do anyone!

For the same reasons as Karen7, Top 4 is priority. Chances of actually winning the CL even when, somehow, getting into the final are 20% at the very very best.

You can see a route to the final if we get extremely lucky but you can't realistically see us winning it. Barca and Bayern are streets ahead of us at present. Top 4 is essential going forward more so than progressing further in the champs league this year. If we don't get 4th it is probably going to set us back considerably and effectively waste a year with Pep in charge. And if he only stays for 3 years then that's a big loss. 4th is paramount, anything else is a bonus

I can't believe some people are turning down a 50/50 shot to win the Champions League for the chance to qualify for next years Champions League, something we can do if we win it and in this hypothetical we've already been placed in the final.

Alright maybe its not 50/50 against Barca but in a one off game surely we have a chance. Anything could happen, Messi could get injured, Suarez could get banned, Barca might not even get past Atletico.

I wonder whether people would turn it down if the Champions League final wasn't against Barca or Bayern.

I'm not an Arsenal fan, so I would rather win something than finish 4th.

Laff.

A final would not guarantee any pots yet either but at least it would give us a chance to win something.

And I don't actually mind Europa League, it's actually easier to make decent weekend trips to Europe lol
The huge downside is having to play league on bloody Sundays tho

I don't think it would be so disastrous to miss out on the CL, a lot of our fanbase seem to dislike the tournament anyway, we never sell out, we boo the anthem - what's the problem? The financial side to it would be the biggest loss, but I think the club can cope. I don't pretend to now much about the state of the club's finances so maybe I'm wrong, but I dont think a year in the Europa would be a disaster while we rebuild our team. I agree it wouldn't be great with Pep coming but if he's as influential as he supposedly is then then mising out on the CL isn't the end of the world!

A final however, gives you memories you'll remember forever, history made and a chance to prove how far we've come - at least in Europe if not domestically this season. And in 90 (maybe 120) mins of football, anything can happen. The players have looked up for it in most CL games this season, they want it and Pellegrini wants it before he leaves. I think this is a great opportunity to make the final of the biggest competition in Europe, if not the world, and I'm not saying we're going to win it, but if we get to the last 4 we're there for a reason.

Champions league final! We can always qualify for that next season. Not going to have such a big knock on effect not being in it for one season. SurePep what get us back in it instantly

Final. You never know in a one off game v anyone and in any case I think we will finish higher than fourth. Happy clapper!? Yeah I know
