Tories win Copeland b-election.

It always surprises me that on these sort of threads the Tory voters show so much concern for the leadership and welfare of the labour party.I suppose they just want to see effective opposition.
It reminds me very much of rags in the pub in the late '90's telling me they wish city were back in the PL.

You can count me out of this list of yours. I hope Labour stay where they are for the next century, so we can get some proper reforms done. The NHS needs sorting out properly, for example, not this farting about with each party throwing a bit more cash at it and nothing major changing. It needs top to bottom reform, the kind of which is impossible when you have a change of government every few years.

Like I said though. Generally the level of concern for the labour party from well meaning conservative voters is most touching :-)

Most voters go for the more central party of Conservative and Labour, because they think centrally. They might be economically conservative but they equally don't want those who are unable to care for themselves fucked over. Labour going way to the left means the Tories can go nearly as far to the right and remain more electable. That isn't in the interest of the average voter.

Well said.

You might have something there, but the complaint with new labour was there was no choice with both being slightly right of center - depending on your perspective.

or because it's the only logical position to hold and also because they want the provision of state support should they ever need it.

I tend to agree. Having two parties offering exactly the same doesn't work either. You would ideally have both the Tories and Labour equidistant from, and reasonably close to, the centre. That way, the unfortunate aren't totally fucked by the Tories and the economy isn't totally fucked by Labour, because they keep each other in check. Which is what people want now.

The other alternative is to have a distinct centrist party sat between the two, and common coalition governments. But the Lib Dems have ostracised themselves from the average voter (at least for the time being) with their policies on Brexit and their broken promises when in power.

Essentially, we have Labour, Lib Dems and Greens all competing for the student, immigrant and 'liberal elite' vote, completely forgetting about the working classes - hence the Copeland result.

It's the logical position to hold for most, but you need a party to offer it. People understand that welfare comes at a cost and they feel that, at the moment, the Tories offer the best cost/benefit solution.

they do for now, but at some point the NHS problem is going to cause serious shit.

And you'd be silly to blame that entirely on the Tories, or vote blindly for Labour under the impression that they'd be able to resolve it.
