Manchester City's horrible week will get even worse if the FA decides to act on video evidence and suspend Yaya Toure for three matches following his petulant kick at Norwich City’s Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

A home defeat to Chelsea and a scoreless draw at Norwich would be compounded if their star midfielder is forced to sit out three games.

But there is an issue with the FA's disciplinary review panel. It really has no consistency and so it is impossible to predict if it will review the incident or not.

Retrospective action? Yaya Toure kick's out at Ricky van Wolfswinkel after the ball has gone

Kicking out: Van Wolfswinkel was left on the ground after clashing with Toure

Fair challenge: Toure went up with Van Wolfswinkel for a high ball

Rage: The Norwich striker couldn't believe what Toure had tried

Complaining: Van Wolfswinkel was very angry after a fair challenge turned nasty

There is also no certainty over whether they will see fit to charge Toure. Chelsea fans will say they should while City fans will say it was a little flick of petulance rather than a violent act.

It compares with David Beckham’s kick on Diego Simeone in the World Cup of 1998, which of course resulted in a red card.

If the FA do charge Toure then they will need to also cite Cardiff's Craig Bellamy for his sneaky elbow on Jonathan de Guzman in the South Wales derby.

Learn from history: The little kick was similar to David Beckham when he lashed out on Argentina's Diego Simeone at the 1998 World Cup and received a red card

Referees are asked for consistency and the governing body must do the same.

That said, in these cases the FA should not take action against either player as neither incident is a major one or particularly violent.

If they are going to step in on a consistent basis then they should only do so with clear and obvious incidents that the active match officials have missed.

Naughty: Craig Bellamy may suffer retrospective action after he hit out at Jonathan de Guzman

Hughton has been sticking his oar in again, just like he did after Ben Arfa broke his leg stupidly going in for a 50:50 ball with NDJ. I had a fair bit of respect for Hughton before then.

My view is that retrospective action should be taken for clear, serious incidents. This was not serious but I do not deny that Yaya did kick him (just) and has thus given the FA the opportunity to follow the media clamour and ban him. BTW for the earlier poster it would be a 3 match ban because violent conduct despite Wes Brown's more serious incident not being violent conduct and therefore only 1 match, increased to 2 because he has been sent off already this season.

Dont talk fucking daft.Where does Houghton say he wants hime banned ?? He gave this response which is a fair summary :

"There was certainly something, but whether that was enough for a red card, then that is for the referee to decide on.

"It was a minimal incident in the game, and the bigger factor was it was a good team performance by us."

Jose Mourinho: Chelsea boss wants ban for Man City's Toure
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says Manchester City's Yaya Toure should be banned after appearing to kick Norwich's Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

Toure, 30, could face a three-game ban for the incident, which took place during City's 0-0 draw at Carrow Road.

"If he is not suspended the message is clear - you can do what you want," said Mourinho. "If the FA defends football he has to be suspended."

The Football Association is awaiting referee Jon Moss's report.

More to follow.

I agree I think Houghton actually tries to play it down saying it had no affect on the game.

Re: Toure kick out - ban?

Whatever happens, ban or not I can accept, but what find Mourinho calling for another team's player to be banned outrageous. He's really p***ing me off now, every day we have to read about some carp coming out of his mouth. I really hope West Brom beat them tomorrow!!

To suggest that Houghton is "sticking his oar In" is stupid,as it relates to his player. He`s hardly likely to say much more, but IMO fair play to him,as you point out he`s trying to play it down,by using those comments.
