Transfer Strategy

If we are being honest, the recruitment has been so shoddy this season.

Fernandinho, a brilliant player and a leader on and off the pitch being replaced by Kalvin Phillips.

Zinchenko a leader on and off the pitch being replaced by Sergio Gomez.

If someone would have said to me at the start of the season, we will end up selling Zinchenko, loaning out Cancelo and only replacing them with a player from the Belgian league that used to be an attacking midfielder, I would have not taken them seriously at all. I really do feel as though the left back position wasn't as big of an issue as a lot were making it out to be. Now we have made ourselves far worse in that area and their aren't any great left back options to choose from in the summer. I'd have preferred to keep Zinchenko over every LB we have been linked with since.

Jesus and Sterling leaving and being replaced by just Julian Alvarez. Alvarez rarely plays because he isn't as versatile as the other two and can only really play through the centre.

We have weakened what was a pretty good squad and left ourselves so short in key areas.

Rodri is having to play every game and is running on fumes because Pep can't trust Kalvin Phillips to step up and be a good enough deputy.

This summer window has been a complete mess and I really hope this summer we rectify it.

Our board have done a lot of good things, brought in a lot of good players and made a lot of correct decisions, but I do feel at times their stubbornness in the transfer market can really have a detrimental impact on our team at times.

This holistic approach isn't working either. We can't let Zinchenko leave first without signing an adequate replacement. We can't let Sterling and Jesus both leave without getting an adequate replacement. We are becoming a bit too much of a soft touch in the transfer market.

We need to be on the front foot and we need to be aggressive in this summer transfer window. We have to get what we need otherwise other clubs could end up catching us up and getting closer to us.

My transfer strategy would be:
Tell Lewis, Rodri, Foden & Haaland they are the future of this club and that we would want to build the team around them. Tell the rest of this tired bunch of players that anyone who dont perform at the top of their level the rest of this season will get sold to the highest bidder in the summer or not play a single more minute in our shirt. Buy 10 new players in the summer, preferably ones that can actually run and is happy to be here. Let Pep sign whoever he wants and how many he wants.
This group of players have served the club greatly over the last couple of years, but they are simply not good enough anymore. Big misjudgment last summer to go into this season with so many players not playing their best football anymore, for whatever reason. Major overhaul needed if we are aiming to win anything but the net spend trophy in coming years.

i mean, i expected some issues on the wings (lack of pace when attacking, no left footed fb). what i didnt expect was injury after injury to stones and dias and for the middle of the pitch to colapse (gundo and de bruyne looking old, bernardo's decline)

Just poor foresight overall. Apart from Haaland, we have mostly been signing for depth.

The creative side of our team, mainly the midfielders, have collectively regressed, and none of the combinations (KDB/Gundo/Bernardo) seem to work at the moment. I'm not sure if Pep would ever play Foden in the middle, but an alternative to Kev is badly needed, someone else to share the creative burden.
Apart of Grealish and Mahrez, there's only well, Foden who's not even a natural winger, and none of them are best known for being pacy.

The squad desperately needs new players to bring fresher ideas to our gameplay - new KEY players. We need to be aggressive, at least for 1 window.

I’m not really into signing cheaper players like Gomez for depth, really I think if we are carrying a reasonably small squad 4 out 5 players need to be top notch to really push established players on and fit in as well as they do within a season. also need to be played in their correct positions 99 percent of the time.

This summer is a window to go big if ever there was one. New ffp rules get more stringent each year, the time for creaming more profits will come in 2 or 3 years time when ffp only lets us spend 70 percent of turnover on wages/ signing fees. Plus going big now will keep us with our foot on the rags throats just as they are having a little resurgence.
