Trevor Francis RIP

Stoke averaged 14,635 in 81-82 and their highest attendance was 25,256 for Tricky Trev's debut

2nd Highest was 20,592 v Tottenham

In contrast, they recorded 19,662 v the rags and only 16,758 v for the eventual League Champions Liverpool.

I always remember as a young kid hearing the news headlines on the ITV news at 10 saying' Francis takes the Maine Road to Manchester', a real buzz that we'd signed a world class striker.

Seems like it was quite a coup for us to sign Francis. Before my time, but how did we manage to pull off this transfer?

That is a total urban myth, I'm afraid. The Maine Road gates when Francis played were mostly in the range 30,000 to 33,000. That was very much in line with the matches the season before and was actually less than matches which he did not play.
That's not true, league average was 28k 80/81 then 34k 81/82 the year we had Trevor then back to 27k 82/83 after he left !

Very sad to read of the passing of Trevor Francis, recall him destroying Brighton at Maine Road. His 1979 transfer fee, adjusted for football inflation (revenue increases over time as a measure of purchasing power) would be £253.5 million today. That’s how good he was.

Ah that's sad, must still have been in his 60s. I know it didn't really work out with us but I was well excited when he signed.

RIP Tricky Trevor
When he was fit to play for us, he was awesome - the ridiculously quick explosive change of direction pace. While he didn't have the physical strength attributes of Mbappe, he definitely had the same crazy ability to have the ball under total control at top speed and change direction at incredible pace. Terrible time for his loved ones. RIP Trevor.
