AFP says an explosion has been heard at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant, and says Japanese TV is showing a white cloud above the plant.

Looks like the containment shell may have over pressurised and cracked. Chernobyl anyone?

Wouldn't think it would be as bad assuming they actually did manage to shut it down, Chernobyl overheated because of a power spike while it was still operational if memory serves.

The problem is there is no power to cool any of the hot water waste and it looks like some of the fuel rods were uncovered. Now you have a site with 6 reactors of which one has no containment case left, another has just exploded probably due to overpressure.

With no power available we could end up with 6 reactors going Hot. Once the rods meltdown it doesn't really matter if the reactor was running or not when it started, what maters is the environment into which the molten fuel collects and what type of reaction is sustained.

I highly doubt the nuclear power plant would blow up. If they can't contain the nuclear reaction the worst case scenario is that they only manage to slow it down and let it leak into the area around the plant. No explosion, no nasty acid rain and no nuclear fall out.
It's still a very nasty problem.

I highly doubt the nuclear power plant would blow up. If they can't contain the nuclear reaction the worst case scenario is that they only manage to slow it down and let it leak into the area around the plant. No explosion, no nasty acid rain and no nuclear fall out.

The containment shell blew to pieces. This shows that they were unable to keep the core cool or to relieve the contaminated steam pressure in a controlled way. Only good thing that will come out of this,is that the whales and marine life will be safe for awhile..
Really hope that the death toll is kept to a minimum but its looking grim..
