Tuition fees

Well said, there's been a few of this kind of generalising comments on this thread. Believe it or not, there exists a breed of student who go to university to LEARN.

In fact, I do more work then most, if not all, of my friends in full time jobs. I work anywhere between 40 and 50 hours a week. 34 hours in university at workshops and lectures. The rest I spend doing a multitude of homework assignments.

So you're trying to tell me after working hard all week I have to stay in all weekend and do nothing? Even though I'm using money I will have to pay back eventually, I think it's only fair some of it can be used for recreational things. It doesn't mean I go out and get hammered every night, I go out once a week if I'm lucky.

Well I'm at it, some of these comments above me also assume that we only take degrees to be high earners. That's also a very narrow minded point of view. I do physics, go and look up the average wage of a physicist and you'll see it's criminal. Barely more than you could earn in your local Morrisons. So why do I do I want to learn it?

Why don't you go and ask Einstein, Plato, Freud etc.

Some people just want to help further the human race. We shouldn't have to sacrifice our livelihood by having a massive debt hanging over our heads all our lives as a result.

Fair enough mate a select few want to change the word and help others, altruism, a wonderful virtue but is there no value in this? Ever heard of the selfish gene?

I for one wish you well in your studies and hope one day you are awarded the Nobel Prize, seriously, but don't say you want to commit your life to a cause with no thought for yourself.

By the way the wages at Morrison's are, I agree, criminal.

Last point, check your books Einstein, Plato, Freud etc. are dead.

You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one.

It could happen though, I have to believe that.

True. You keep believing mate. When hope is all you've got...

The law of averages says that at some point a girl will respond 'yes' to the question 'do you want to look at my Morrissey 12"?'

As soon as you mention him I'd say your chances drop even more :-)

Won't it be cheaper studying in Europe or in the states? Surely with the increase of fees will put students off and turn their backs on educating themselves in UK.

There are a few recognised universities in Europe.

But regardless, at the same time, with the increase of student fees, wont this leave the door open for future goverments trying to stump it up even more now that the trend was put in place by labour.

This thread and the whole subject of tuition fees being too much is proof that people do not care for achievement over money.

I'm applying for university for next year, and I can tell you now, i don't give two shits about the debt because I will have a degree in law, and given my family history, no debt can take that pride away from me. I'm on an access course now trying to change my life not for me, but for my children. If there is any would be student out there moaning, F**k off, (notice the capital f).

How about them students giving their places to people like me who want a degree and success regardless of the cost. By the way, my course is in law and so because I'm going to study a decent degree, the debt will be equivalent to my wages..simple

So please, if you want success, you have to pay for it, which hopefully after going to university you will learn.

Great attitude, and I hope you succed-but what if you're already in debt,or from a family for whom you getting £35,000 into debt is just never ever going to be an option?
This cynic in me says this increase in fees is nothing to do with education being "too expensive" and everything to do with keeping the poor and less well off in their place....there are simply too many applying for two few courses at the moment-so the Uni's know they can get away with charging pretty much what they like.

The new City traders.

It's a scandal almost on par with Brown's pension funds robbery.

I came from a family where University was just another word in the dictionary.
It was just assumed that you went out to work when you left school,or if you were really lucky you finished your two years at the local college.

I was looking to go to Uni next year-it was tight as it is but if it increases by 30% as a working bloke with a family it's game over.

I can cope-but it's my kids I worry for.
They'll be back to where I was 25 years ago.

If the state suddenly decides it has no real obligation to assist in the education of it's young people, and leaves it entirely to market forces to decide who get's entitlement to the best-then it's seriously time to look elsewhere in the world to live?

So if you shouldn't have to pay then who should?

It's easy to talk in principle but unfortunately someone has to pick up the bill.

It should be funded by the state. An educated nation is a great asset for a country.

A persons education should not be dependant on the class they happen to born into or how much their dad can afford to give them.

As things stand, by the time you've got a degree and mortgage you're 100k in debt and likely still under 35. That's fucking grim however you look at it.

If we can afford to bomb children, have piggies sitting on motorways watching cars drive past and all the false terror investigation which all conclude with several young Asian males being released due to 0 evidence then we can afford to give our children an education and give them the best possible start in life.

No wonder we have a nation of shell suited, semi literate, dribbling goons. Education is belittled, scorned and priced out of reach for the young and working class.

Deprive the youth of an education and a fair chance and you get what you get: 'chavs', 'hoodies', whatever.

I've got my degree but fuck knows how my heir will go on when it's his turn.

To some extent I agree with you. We live in a country which wastes vast amounts of cash in many many ways. A country which has one of the lowest rates of corporate tax in the Western World. Where huge international organisations are allowed to avoid tax, with impunity.Where the gap between rich and poor accelerates each year.

Yet we allow those same employers to pay what is little more a than subsidence living to the majority which, is subsidised by the social security system in the form of tax credits. They are then taxed and in turn some of this money goes to pay for further eduction, oh the irony!

We pay, in total, benefits of a fraction less to those who can't or won't work.

These same people (workers and unemployed) are then told fuck you, you should have done better at school gotten an education, done better for yourself. Looser.

All the while middle class wankers deride them and call them chavs etc

Not everything can be solved by FE the choice you made isn't the only blueprint for life, a degree isn't the only way top make a good living.

To be frank you're as much the part of the problem than the answer ''Deprive the youth of an education and a fair chance and you get what you get: 'chavs', 'hoodies', whatever.''

What's a ''fair chance'' can you only get one via a degree?
