Tuition fees

it is a luxury! thats what people forget. thats why years ago, a degree was to be in awe at. i really really REALLY doubt a student will get into £30,000 of debt, who did these sums? Gordon Brown?

if people want to become a specialist in the area which they wish to work, they should pay for it. several of the people on my course are from africa. A whole 4 out of 16 people on my course are british!

so answer me this. the 12 africans in my lesson have ALL said they are going to study here then once they graduate, they are going to go back to their own countries. OUR government pay for their course fee's because they have lived over here for longer than 1 year and because their studying, they dont need visas. so our government is paying for 12 foreigners a total of £38,600 for them to be taught!!!and guess what...will we see any benefit from that? NO!!! their going back to their own countries. so thats 12 places on just 1 COURSE! there are over 1200 access courses run each year in the uk.

them 12 places from my course should go to someone from college next year who will carry on residing in the uk, like i am. there is on average 7000 places given to foreign, mature access students with a whopping, wait for.....7% of whom stay to live in the uk after graduation! and who pays for these 7000 places, free of charge. our country and our tax payers.

so why isnt this story in the news everyday? because it's racist to suggest we should not allow foreigners to be taught for free at our unis. the majority of foreign students pay substantial fees for the chance (i really admire them students). why do you think tuiton fees are going up? because the unis are using more gas in the winter? it's because the government are spending millions a year for free university tuition fees for foreign studets. Please, before you jump on my case. i've had a friend rejected from university straight from college with excellent grades, and had a foreign friend who coincidentally got on the same course, same uni, same year, free of charge, studied sports science, then moved back to spain. my mate now works part time at schuh.

labour were so lenient it broke englands spine, the coalition are trying their best to operate on this break. universities arent going to become extinct. those who are saying they worry for their childrens future....work hard now! many people do get into more debt by becoming mature students, theres no excuses, i quit work so i could spend time studying hard to get onto uni, i have THREE kids! i have no money whatsoever but i do know that in 4 years time i'll have a degree with the prospects of earning 5 times the amount i was 4 months ago. just have to bite your lip as hard as you can for as long as possible...you only life once, make the most of it. dont let money be a burden.

This is severe nonsense.

Students will be easily in over £30k of debt. Student loan of £4k per year, fees of £8k. This is for 1 year, most degrees are 3-5 years. I hope you aren't on a Maths course.

Besides, the idea that University should separate the best and the brightest is grotesque. University should be for anybody who wants to go. Education is the solution to nearly every single problem in the world. We have survived as a species because of our willingness to share information throughout the generations; to disregard this now would be tragic.

There are things that you use in your everyday life that you have to thanks scholars from 5000 years ago for. If they had the same idea that knowledge and title is only for a few, then we'd still be building mud huts and praying to the Sun

EDIT: You need to severely increase your logic skills if you are going into Law. You should start reading up on logical fallacies and think about how they fit into people's arguments. This is actually a good place to look as we have a range of people, with a range of different debating skills, with a range of different opinions.

This thread and the whole subject of tuition fees being too much is proof that people do not care for achievement over money.

I'm applying for university for next year, and I can tell you now, i don't give two shits about the debt because I will have a degree in law, and given my family history, no debt can take that pride away from me. I'm on an access course now trying to change my life not for me, but for my children. If there is any would be student out there moaning, F**k off, (notice the capital f).

How about them students giving their places to people like me who want a degree and success regardless of the cost. By the way, my course is in law and so because I'm going to study a decent degree, the debt will be equivalent to my wages..simple

So please, if you want success, you have to pay for it, which hopefully after going to university you will learn.

With the rationale used there, it's probably best that you get nowhere near a courtroom.

im at uni, and i'm glad that the fee's were going up, too many people have now got a degree which has devalued them.

It's not about the degree, sir. It's about the education. Can you not see?

what the balls!? a student pays 9% of what they earn OVER £15,000, so if a graduate gets of a job paying £20,000, they have to pay 9% of £5,000 that's £450...PER YEAR! typical student loan is £3200 per year. 86% of uni courses are 3 years full time, 5 years would be part time on the same loan amount anyway. 3200 x 3 = 9600, tuition fees of £3220 per year at the university of manchester, x 3 = 9660. a grand total for me - £19260. NOT £30,000! if i then get a job totalling £30,000 a year, i'd pay back £112 a month. if my monthly salary falls below £1200 a month...i pay nothing. After all this, i then have the pride in obtaining a degree, which is worth more than any amount of money (the original point of my earlier post) how and why should i be worried about student debt and what was your point in replying to my post? and you agree with uk students with hard working parents having to pay for tuition and miss places in uni in favour for foreign students who pay nothing into society after receiving exceptional education? If we were living by your way of thinking, everybody would be sucking of the same tit....and that isn't healthy is it.

At least it'll cut down on students using student loans to pay for a car or to go on the piss.

so the £3200 average student loan is enough to pay for rent, food, materials, and other compulsory things such as trips? I think not. my student loan is going to be about £3500, rent is £3800. I'm having to work 50 hours a week at the moment to pay for it, which I am quite happy to do because I agree I should have to pay for my education. but coming out of uni with that much debt is still a huge burden on you.

That's a pretty elitist "I'm alright Jack" attitude,if you don't mind me saying so.

Lucky you, that you're in a position to be able to absorb any increases.

All raising fees will do is make access to an EDUCATION and the chance to earn more money over their career even less attractive or accesible to the less well off....thus the cycle continues.

I have two bright kids who I think would love the opportunity to go to Uni.
But with the crazy cost of living in this country, and the attitude of this present "march or die" shower of a "government" I'm wondering where the hell all this extra money's going to come from.

I hope that when you leave Uni you, get yourself into a position where you don't have to worry about such trivial matters "devaluing" your 2-1.
