I went to Marmaris five years ago. Don't walk down the street as you'll be mithered to death by every restauranteur in town, especially if - like me- you don't tan. They'll never leave your missus alone either. Don't buy anything there. It's like Strawberry Fields - nothing is real. Nothing. Don't even think bout buying any cigs, especially B&H as they'll be sweepings off the factory floor and will give you pleurisy at the very least. The only beer they sell is Efe's and don't, whatever you do, stop in the street as a local with a toothbrush and some mysterious liquid will start cleaning your shoes, badly before demanding money for the privilege. with menaces.

Otherwise, enjoy your holiday.

Replace Efes with Carlsberg and you could be describing Heywood.
Apart from the fact they don't have toothbrushes in Heywood.

O don't like Marmaris one bit, we always go to Iclemer up the road which is a far nicer place, plus you don't get hassled as they have a very tough Mayor, places that do get closed down

here you go Stu:-

"lootfen" - please

"tesheckoolair" - thank you

you'll hear these words pretty quickly so you can practice your pronunciation upon arrival... the Turkish accent is different and I've been spelling the words above as I think they're best spelt in English.

if you're in a tourist resort most people will be speaking English to you, even the guys in the street selling knock-off merchandise - and since Turkey produces well over a third of all Europe's clothing you'll find buying stuff like this very inexpensive.

you'll have fun and find Turkey as hospitable as any other place you could visit, if not more so.

thanks mate,

sound advice!

I can't believe this conversation is taking place in the 21st century. It is Marmaris you're off to, not Mars, right?

Tried Mars.................... couldn't get a veza.

-- Sat Aug 07, 2010 11:43 pm --

I know a few guys have been having a laugh on here, and it has been an amusing read, in all honesty, but if you have some concerns about where you are going there are a couple of things you can do.

You can buy a good guide book. Rough Guide give a good assessment of a country, as do Lonely Planet.

You can also go on the travel forum at Lonely Planet. It will give you a straightforward, no nonsense description of things.

Just Google Lonely Planet and have a look at their forum.

You will probably have your questions answered by reading a few posts, but if you don't, ask the question(s) you have and you will receive your answer.

Good luck, by the way, and please don't be paranoid.

Leave your expectation of life in England behind, and don't worry. Not everyone is a crazed murderer!

Lonely Planet? will check this out later today, I had a stright talk with my Kelly last night about it. She said not to worry its no different from going on a night out in Preston or Manchester.

It sounds like a good forum tho. I'll report back for later.

see are the things I am worried about, not so much people asking for me to come in their restaurant because you get that everywhere. But people hastle you so they can clean you shoes! WTF!

You go on hoilday to get away from all that hussle and bussle but then drop yourself right in the center of it all.

I may alright at saying no to them, kelly will just talk to them and spend all our money in a day. I don't want to locked up in the hotel all 10 days but I can see me just not wanting to go because of the hassle:

This advise is all mint lads but you can only find out for yourself can't you.

Your bothered about people hassaling you about your shoes when you have just come in their restaurant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The mind boggles :-)
