tv licence

I'd be more inclined to pay it if they weren't scrapping one of the only BBC channels I do occasionally watch to save money to fund a channel I don't watch, I don't like BBC radio stations so listen to either cd's I like or local stations, I find it annoying I have to pay for something I don't need or want to be honest.

How do they know who does/doesn't have one in a block of flats?

They send out a lot of letters suggesting that they know you have a tv.
I've never had a license , only put the telly on for streaming films or games through laptop.

Have had the occasional knock on the door possibly from them but only open it if I know the person knocking so never had any trouble.

It's pretty much a monopoly from the BBC. Surely you should have the choice of service you want like with any other product or service out there? I find it criminal that you pay a tv license then another fee for sky or BT on top of that. The BBC should be made to compete with sky, virgin etc..

If the BBC actually provided some good entertainment then I'd feel happy about paying it but these days it's mostly shite. Sports coverage is generally shite, Top Gear is hit and miss these days, there are some great documentaries but are few a far between and the news is simply patronising where they assume the audience has the mental age of a 12 year old.

The fact that there are people who think the only things worth watching are Top Gear, BBC3 and sport is the greatest argument for keeping the licence fee. Making the BBC subscription only would be a race to the bottom and goodbye to anything of cultural value.

A change is coming soon anyway.
They could do what France does, own a TV then you pay whether you watch TV or not.
They're talking about scrambling the signal and a licence purchase unscrambling it, don't know how feasible that is.
I reckon they will definitely change the law to include iPlayer whether or not you watch only time shifted TV.

The BBC these days is absolute rubbish. Any argument that may have existed in the past for them not to have advertising is null, because what they put on is indistinguishable from what is on ITV and the other commercial channels. (It didn't use to be so, the BBC has gone a long way downmarket, in newspaper terms from Independent to Daily Star.)
