TV Series

Pagan peak is a must watch for anyone into gritty Nordic crime. The main characters are damaged and the storylines interesting without going over the top.

Different from the usual American crime drama. The pace is different and the storytelling direct and raw without the fluff.

If you like Bron/broen give it a go.

I have still to watch series 3 so no spoilers thanks.

Shining Girls (2022), I watched four episode so far, a solid and atmospheric sci-fi chiller. Elisabeth Moss is excellent as always and Jamie Bell is up to no good.

I started watching bass reeves last night. Good first episode. I thought the lead actor looked familiar so googled him to find that he was in spooks. We’re in the middle of watching spooks for the first time and decided to take a break from it and watch bass reeves. He aged 30 years in 30 mins.

Incredibly only just got round to watching The Queen's Gambit. I always felt this was connected to the 'Crown' series....some kind of royaly link (even though I knew it was about chess).

Absolutely beautiful production that leaves most television in it's wake.
Not just the production, but the acting. Anya Taylor-Joy is immensely watchable in everything I've seen her in.

Gonna miss this :(

Just started Deadloch (as in two mins ago) after lots of v good reviews.

Been back a few pages on here to get a new list built up.
Was going to ask for a winter/xmas binge recommend (i.e. something that fits the season). Not House of the Dragon or The Terror so perhaps some new Scandi drama? I used to devour sandi dramas but ended up getting sick of them.
The first Killing series was brilliant, as was Borgen (and actually Wallander) but many left me cold once the interior design porn wore off.

Anyone seen Ragnarok? Feels like it's a 7/10 overall.

Slow Horses is def on my list - pehaps Arcane (after finishing Blue Eye Samurai which was great).

Easily one of the best series I’ve seen in many a year, oddly, I felt similar maybe to you mate in that it wasn’t something that just automatically grabbed my attention, because it was about ‘Chess’ I guess, but it was utterly magical.

I watched the brief 'making of' afterwards (15 mins on Netflix) and you could just tell from those involved this would end up being a piece of art.
Often the subject matter (Chess in this instance) plays second fiddle to the human stories. But these stories were brought to life by people so very creative and loving of their craft.

Reminded me a little of why I liked Mad Men. A show that broke the fourth wall down: not by the Peep Show/Ferris Bueller style of characters talking to the camera but just how believable the scenes were. You completely fall into these shows and the 'acting' is absorbed into the drama.
As a counterpoint, when I watch many TV dramas, all I see is 'actors' and props....I'm looking at you Peaky Blinders.

May even watch again as some of the stuff I've mentioned above seems watered down in comparison.

Hoping Slow Horses delivers.
