Watched ep 7 of Alien Earth, some divisive choices but the two playing the young kids were excellent dealing with Arthur's predicament.

The last 2 minutes, just felt it went a bit melodramatic. Let's hope the series gets the finale it deserves. Seems season 2 is more or less confirmed too.

I watched every episode as they came out and within the last week I`ve started from scratch, as it must be at least 10 years since I watched series 1.I must admit there was an awful lot I had forgotten about, so its like watching a new programme.

I have to agree with you. I thought the episode lost its way in places, myself.

I think the issue is the 'Nibs' character for me. I feel like the trauma involved hasn't been explored properly, so the following result doesn't sit right. Maybe it's the result of not knowing if the series would be renewed, but that scenario and the 'Marcie' development has sped up some, when it didn't need to.

As you say the 'Smee' and 'Slightly' combo is pretty great in how they interact and I think it's been one of the highlights of the show. But topping that combo HAS to be the 'Kirsch' and 'Morrow' dynamic. The direct rivalry and respect for each other's intellect is brilliant to watch.

I just want to know what they do with 'The Eye', then I'll be happy!

i only watched the first episode and thought it was a comedy. Jonathan Watson as a serious actor? Ewen Bremner as a God botherer? I turned it off and watched a Danish series on Netflix called the secrets that we keep. it was very well made, acted and told an engaging story. Why the fuck can the Scandinavians make superior intelligent dramas and we can only turn out shite like Coldwater?

Yep Kirch and Morrow are the two big beasts of the series and a big set piece battle must be on the cards.

Like you say creepy eyeball monster plus sheep equals some very memorable villainy. I think we haven't seen big plant thing do it's stuff so hopefully it'll cut loose. And is Boy Kavalier set up for his comeuppance?

Overall it's been a great series, but lots of questionable decisions from people who should know better. Also the way the xeno is photographed, it just obviously looks like a man in a suit, darker lighting and limited screen time would help. The acting has been very good especially Morrow and although I had doubts about making the synths kids, they have been spot on. Fingers crossed it gets another series, maybe with a massive infestation.....

No matter, there's clearly another couple of series left in this and I'm glad for Michael C. Hall.

Finished the main series couple of nights ago, weighing up weither to go down the spin off route or just leave them alone.
 
Dexter: Resurrection

It’s absolutely bonkers the story now but for me it’s just good entertaining TV.

Loved the original series. Even the later seasons.
Didn’t particularly like New blood.

But Resurrection is back to Dexter doing what he does best. The character is great and I hope he carries on murdering people in cold blood for seasons to come ;-)
 
The Girlfriend on Prime. Great. Really really enjoyed it. Different to all the cop/detective/special forces stuff that keeps coming out. Acting is good too.

The old Harwich to Hamburg ferry that they discontinued on full display there. It had a disco on it and you could get bladdered listening to Nina blowing up her balloons :)

Because we have a successful formula that they keep banging out again and again:
But of action for the guys.
Bit of romance and intrigue for the ladies.
Bit of sex for both.
Twisty plot line with unexpected cliffhangers.
Leave the possibility of a 2nd series of successful.

Then write the story to fit it.

I find it difficult to find anything different but they are out there.

I'm not sure what Coldwater is trying to be, comedy, dark comedy, serious drama, relationships drama... I think it's got mixed up.

Anyway it's been a bit silly, with characters doing stupid uncharacteristic things that seem to be done for the benefit of an exciting plot line, a plot line that has so many holes in it.
And the weather in Scotland is always that sunny? Never seems to rain there.

Disappointed... that I have to watch all of it because my Mrs says I never watch her stuff. And I have to enjoy it. At least its not full of virtue signaling lesbian action hero's fighting against the tyranny of rapist men, again. Or the long drawn out suffering of someone dying dramas and books she sometimes read.

Hmm I'm in a mood today.

Justified S1 uses the formulaic "villain of the week" format whilst slowly developing the Justified universe and side-characters in the background.

From S2 onwards we get the multi-layered stories that arch throughout the whole series, its absolutely worth sticking with for the final series payoff.

Thing is the Danish series I mentioned had all of the above plus it managed to weave in some social commentary about the role of Filipino immigrants supporting the Danish privileged classes (vibes of the film Parasite that won some Oscars a few years ago). So the story for starters was a great deal more sophisticated, interesting and poignant than Coldwater. Then add in superior production values, realistic acting, well written dialogue and you have something that was in a different league. When you compare many of the Scandi noir stuff like The Bridge and The Killing it really shames our efforts. It seems it is only the real pinnacle of productions like Wolf Hall that we make a fine job of. The rest is middling to low brow simplistic pap.

Wolf Hall is my standard. I always have that in mind when I am looking for English good drama. I've done the Bridge and The Killing. Done a few of the Walter Presents series too. If you have any other recommendations I am all ears.
