Two more retail companies look doomed

The figures for retail store closures and resulting job losses is becoming ever more stark.

Unless we want town centres to become hollowed out and become the preserve of betting shops, charity shops, vape shops and the like, there needs to be a levelling of the playing field with online retail. Personally i'd like to see an online sales tax.

I'm lucky. I live in Brighton which has a vibrant and to some extent independent retail scene, which makes it a fun and interesting place to live. But even so, there are plenty of empty retail units.

Those that just shrug and say oh well it's market forces and you can't do anything about it are wrong. You can, but like anything it's whether you can be bothered.

Again, personally, i like shops and shopping or mooching around shops, and I would lament the passing of physical retail. Also, remember, it's the largest nationwide employer and provides local, employment opportunity for young people, mothers, students, part-timers etc. It will be lost at our peril.

The retail sector won't be around in it current guise for alot longer, I think they will create a number of viewing spaces where you view items before you buy, then shipped to your home directly.
The company i work for, this is essentially their long term vision. The physical stores will mainly just be a centre for people to come and view things, repair and test things, customise them and get a physical feel for the products, but the majority of actual business will be done online.

They'd do it now if they could, but too many customers are still in the mindset of wanting a tradition shop, it will be a slow transition.

Debenham's planning to close up to 50 stores. The first 22 have been confirmed (Manchester isn't on that list), with no closures planned before next Christmas (2019). Can't post a link as it's on the Sky News app.

As i understand it they had to go into a technical bankruptcy or something for 1 hour. Then they got sold. Not sure how but it was to stop Mike Ashley, again, as i understand it with basic info given to me.

shocking about Debenhams,,where is it going to end,the high streets are going to end up with charity shops,Bookies and fast food outlets and for anything else its ebay or amazon,so no business rates for the council therefore your council tax increases, vicious circle

Lost the shareholders all their shares by doing this.

Including Ashley who is down 150 million.
