UEFA Champions League changes

The coefficient thing isn't too bad really as it could rotate between countries depending on performance in the competition. It does reward failure though.

The format isn't too bad when you consider the format of the early 2000s which involved two group stages of six games each followed by a QF, SF and F. That was really bloated.

UEFA were always at some point going to attempt to expand the competition and this still stays at two less games than that version

the money in PL means we'll always get extra spot thats why arsenal spurs and rags will vote for it

The real problem is that UEFA are in an unwinnable position.

The money flooding into the PL is slowly going to turn it into the "NBA of football" as I think Tebas predicted a few years ago. In 10 years time it's entirely plausible, probable even, that 7 of the best 10 teams in the world are in the PL.

The other big teams in Europe - Top3 in Spain, PSG, Bayern - are all trying to fight against that by getting more money. The Italian clubs will join them now Juve, Inter and Milan are strong for the first time in 10 years.

Hosting an exciting, even, European club football competition that includes the best teams in the world and a variety of nations isn't really possible any more.

So for once, I am prepared to give them some slack to experiment and see how things turn out. Everyone panned the Nations League and Conference League but both have turned out popular and successful.

Presumably England will get one pretty much every season though. Does it just automatically go to the 5th placed club, or the team with the highest co-efficient in the country?
Goes the highest placed club in the league outside of the automatic CL qualifying spots, so in the PL it would be 5th.

Also have to factor in the Netherlands have got theirs based partly on Ajax but also Feyenoord and PSV doing really well in the lesser competitions so there is potential for other leagues to swoop in. The main factor in England's spot is the dominance of the top 3 but that's cyclical in the CL.

The only supporters who won't eventually turn their backs on it are the football tourists, who already make up an increasing percentage of CL games.
I stopped going to CL games when I found that I was surrounded by happy-snapping trippers with half and half scarves and bagfulls of souvenirs from the club shop.
Plastic football for plastic fans. Just what Soriano and Co want to see.
Just a worldwide marketing platform.

Probably already discussed but does this mean that 5th place would get the extra spot? Thus is much better than someone getting in on historical matters

2 extra places awarded now from 2024.

What the point? Competition is ruined…exactly what they wanted. Load of shit and integrity is lost.

If city and Liverpool do well the 5th place get in. What a joke. Rags will still miss out ;)
We will have to play the whole of the EDS team in the League Cup.

“Each club will play eight league stage games against different opponents, with four home ties and four away.

The top eight will go through to the knockout stage, while those from ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged play-off to progress.”

Who picks those 8 opponents, and how?

Could we get Real Madrid, Barca, Ajax, Bayern, Juve, Liverpool, PSG in our “League Stage”???

The levels and ability for corruption are become more and more frequent…and that’s even before you pick the refs!!!

Not quite pal, it will be top 4 plus a ballot for all clubs with the initials mufc. Here’s hoping that Maidstone u****d win the ballot.

It’s from 2024/25 so still time for them to change it again.

What I read was it will go on how well the teams in Europe in the league does who get that 5th spot and going of the premier teams record in Europe it be the premier who are odds on getting that 5th spot.

Wonder if this will lead to the premier league actually backing those playing in Europe by insisting on decent fixture scheduling.

My understanding is that the extra place(s) come in the 24/25 season, based on performances in European competition in the preceding season 23/24, which means the extra place (outside of the top 4) is only available to teams that
a) qualify for Europe 23/24 , ie do well in the PL next season
b) do well in Europe 23/24

If the problem is a concentration of wealth in a small number of clubs from the big leagues, as Italian clubs would argue, then this just makes it worse.

It makes the early rounds more shit. And puts more clubs from the elite leagues in.

So, how many extra games is this and where are they planning on fitting them in? Are they expecting the PL to cut the number of members?
