A person was arrested but claims that he was on his way to the vigil to hurt people was bullshit.

He also didn't have a machete, it was a pocket flip knife.

People on twitter and elsewhere were lying, because they are far right numpties who want to cause trouble.

40 years ago It wasn't advisable to walk round those places you mention at night, absolute no go areas for those that didn't live there and amongst the highest crime rates in the North West, especially Moss Side. Think time had played a trick on your memory.

The Smiths recorded Rusholme Ruffians in 85 so basically 40 years ago. Manchester is a particularly interesting example because there are parts of the city you wouldn't have dreamed of walking alone 25 years ago - Ancoats, parts of Salford - that have now been gentrified beyond belief. Funny on a football forum as well when half the nostalgia of pre-92 is that you could get the shit kicked out of you at any game. Like you say, people's memories play tricks on them.

People's timelines on what or when a place "went to shit" is always so confused. Statistically, people are less likely to experience interpersonal violence than at any other point in history, and there have been marked declines since the mid-20th century all over the world. There's been a bit of a small movement upwards over the last year or two in the UK, but generally speaking we are living in one of the safest countries at the safest time in human history.

Many of the accounts won't be real people. That's the scary thing.

It's where the misinformation/lies came from that sparked the riot last night.

Crazy to think a social media app could cause real world consequences.

I've already said it...they start with hate and then attempt to find reasons to justify that hate. So many people were desperate for the attacker to be muslim or an asylum seeker. Hate first, reasons later.
