When you were 'a kid'? You'd know nowt in '59. However, are you talking around '66, when there was a smattering of 'coloured' faces and a controllable ethnic minority?
Maybe you should consider going back further, to a time when the indigenous people didn't think they were too good for the menial jobs around and therefore there not being a need to open the borders for other nationalities to do these jobs for the country??
OR, even better still, check your own heritage, cos matey, the odds are very high that YOU are, indeed, an immigrant too, by default...
I think you may have jumped the gun here a bit mate (as you soppy Lib Dem types have a habit of doing so) by mentioning 'coloured faces' etc.
What he probably means is back when he was a kid the country was a safer place to be. Not perfect but safer - by far. When there was discipline in schools. When there wasn't a cancer called 'benefits culture' dragging the country down. When Jeremy Kyle TV didn't exist. When the military and the soldiers who were in it were respected. When Internet porn didn't hit your kids from every angle. When the NHS was run properly and so on. guinnessdaze never mentioned race, immigration or anything like it. YOU did!
So take a look in the mirror, give your head a good wobble and stop jumping to huge conclusions. Think before you post.
TGR, couldn't have put it better mate, my exact sentiments.
Bigga, feel sorry for you pal, I'm no racist nor patriotic, I just want fairness in MY country.
Oh dear. We all want idealism, but you know what? Time doesn't stand still. We are in '59 no more. You have get on with it. So if 'guinnessdaze' isn't harping on about a time when immigration was low compared to now, why is his post in this thread and he's not created a nostalgia thread to suit his needs??
You cannot have it both ways. Did I jump the gun? I don't think so. You have idealist comments that have no place in this thread:
...when he was a kid the country was a safer place to be. Not perfect but safer - by far.
Violence, robbery, rapes and murders happened all the time. Just not as widely reported as it now. Just look at the Savile cases, if you don't believe that!!
When there was discipline in schools
Interesting to think that discipline and respect is a schooling matter...
When there wasn't a cancer called 'benefits culture' dragging the country down
You have governments to blame for a system that has been going since 1919. You can mainly blame Thatcher for gutting the apprenticeship scheme for young people.
When the military and the soldiers who were in it were respected.
Who doesn't respect the soldiers? The odd few extremists whose land the soldiers fight in? The only other disrespect shown is to the government by the people who disagree with the reason to occupy a foreign land with our children.
When Internet porn didn't hit your kids from every angle
Well, there was no internet then, so I dunno what you're talking about, but PORN has been existence since ability to put pictures on a page. If you hide it from your kids, like then, there shouldn't be a problem. After all, if you go looking, you find. As in, back in the day, in your father's shoe box, under the mattress, on the top shelf of a cupboard OR even when your mates, at school bring the pages found in a skip!
Let's not even mention behind the bike shed where all sorts went on!
Stop idealising a false memory. The only difference between now and then is the speed of knowledge and information. Stop trying to tack anything else to it.
*Big respect to Chris in London, who beat me to the punch!!
