United (A) - League Cup SF | Post-Match Thread

Your point about Best is well made. I saw him play live more times than most United fans because my dad (a Red) used to take me (Blue) to Old Trafford one week and Maine Road the next. This was between 1967 and 1971 (when I became old enough to take myself just to Maine Road).
He was brilliant in some games but very inconsistent and rarely turned up for the biggest matches. I have even seem him being booed by a section of United fans for lack of effort.
You could compare him to Leroy Sane. But the more the years have gone by the bigger the myth has grown. He was nowhere near the level of people like Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, Cruyff. And I would say David Silva was a vastly better player who never had the recognition.
Mrs Vienna reckons he never got the better of Mike Summerbee, but then, Buzzer was her favourite player.

She also told me that she and her City-supporting friends used to go to his and Buzzer's shop, hoping to see Mike, but if he wasn’t there, and Best was, they’d try to wind Best up by saying things like, City are better than the rags, we’ll beat you in the derby, etc.

Not once did he bite, which used to annoy her and her mates no end.

Think it's gone a little bit under the radar how well Steffan played. His distribution under pressure was excellent. Don't remember him misplacing a pass?

Very good stop from Fernandes in the first half as well. He is more than capable, Ederson has never had pressure from the back up keeper put on him whilst he’s been here, this guy may do that.

I never saw Best play well in a Derby match. He made his name when United beat Benfica 5-1 away in Europe and became known as El Beatle. He was arguably football's first proper media icon. A sort of David Beckham figure. But his off-field brand was always bigger than his contribution on the pitch. He was a huge star in the media and a much-loved entertainer but an overrated player. Bobby Charlton was a world-class player and technically brilliant....but he was boring!

I'm trying to recall which chat show host said to Best "The Miss World competition was really "Find George Best's next girlfriend ""

I experienced the same thing next door used to take me OT from 67 to 71 to be fair he also took me to all City home games aswell, remember the git letting me down and giving my ticket to his mate for the 1970 second leg semi. Your right Best was a total publicity job, the Beatles thing was amusing, I saw him as being to football as what Jimmy Tarbuck was to comedians?.
Only thing I recall from him at OT was every time he touched the ball you could hear the shrill of girls screaming in the Stretford End, as a ten year old I thought this strange, but did explain the Song the Platt Lane used to sing in 1966, ....”where’s your handbag, where’s your handbag, where’s your handbag Georgie Best....” lol
