United (A) - League Cup SF | Post-Match Thread

A bit emotional to post anything after the match, if I'm honest. But had in my mind already and started writing it the following day after finishing from work. And yes, it took a couple of hours, lol...

Anyway, I would like to thank you and all the posters for their kind words, really really appreciate it. Thanks to all...
It was a masterpiece.

Yeah I made the same point about Pogba in another thread a few times. He's definitely rated mostly for his fame and PR. It's like Beckham and Ronaldo. Now, obviously Ronaldo is an excellent player and far better than the other two, but the fame has long outgrown the talent and the fame and sycophantic celebrity worshipping fans is why he gets rated by some as better than Messi and other players from history who were better than him. He's overrated just on a higher level.

Players like Ronaldo, Beckham and Pogba always get overrated on account of their fame and PR. It's the shite world we live in. It makes me wonder if the same happened with Best in the 60s.
Funnily enough one of the things I noticed on the second watch was Pogba. He flatters to deceive, as my dad says. Struts around and strikes the ball nicely and you think he’s going to be a threat. But he has a poor football brain and continually tries Long fancy passes that don’t come off.

but worse than that, he can’t be bothered to press or tackle. I was amazed when I noticed it. He just lets the opposition play around him. He wouldn’t last five minutes under Pep. I wonder if that’s why he never came to City when someone I trust said he wanted to come: Maybe Pep had a word with Txiki when he was at Bayern.

Just watched the game again and wanted to share some analysis with you.

When Fernandinho fouls Fernandez (around 20 min) you see him turn around see that it is Fernandinho and beg for a card.

Fernandez knows if Fernandinho gets booked there he can play off him all game knowing he cannot touch him again, letting him run the game.

When no booking arrives Fernandez goes missing big time

Fernandinho disciple when on a yellow is second to none.
Even if he gets booked in the first five minutes.

So true man.

Your point about Best is well made. I saw him play live more times than most United fans because my dad (a Red) used to take me (Blue) to Old Trafford one week and Maine Road the next. This was between 1967 and 1971 (when I became old enough to take myself just to Maine Road).
He was brilliant in some games but very inconsistent and rarely turned up for the biggest matches. I have even seem him being booed by a section of United fans for lack of effort.
You could compare him to Leroy Sane. But the more the years have gone by the bigger the myth has grown. He was nowhere near the level of people like Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, Cruyff. And I would say David Silva was a vastly better player who never had the recognition.
Thanks for the info mate. I did suspect that while he was a great player, they somewhat overegg the pudding.

I think it was simply that we weren’t prepared to shell out all the money that the rags had to pay for him.
