United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

i cant see us finishing top 4 now, 3 of those places almost certainly taken up with one place left for around 6 teams, were not in that six, no where near so its not happening, the other two competitons may be best avoided if were going for a rebuild, who do you blame because there has to be blame at some point, Pep, the charges?, the writting was on the wall around the treble win period certainly with players like KDB but it goes back well before when we didnt replace players of the same quality when the likes of Kompany retired, there may well not have been a ready replacement but we should have been intergrating these players not 4 or 5 in one go but one at a time going back over the last 8 years and now its bitten us on the backside, with or without Pep there is nothing to salvage this season except stay above the bottom 3, we go into transition then at the end of season clear out the elderly and deadwood and go again, we'l be back but it wont happen overnight its going to take a couple of years, at least i might stand a chance of a season ticket in the new stand

Why didn't Gvardiol clear that Diallo effort off the line? Even if he had to use his "wrong" foot.
He was well capable of clearing it. You think a proper defender would try and back heel it? FFS were not in training, this is a real game. Great header for the goal but hes a total liability in defence.

No we do not pay their wages.
I read somewhere that matchday ticket revenue, including seasoncards, are a very minor part of a top club's income. And that they could still make money playing in an empty stadium. It's simply that empty grounds wouldn't look good on the telly. Remember lockdown? All those banners placed over the empty seats?

Pep can come out and say "i am not good enough" but if he doesn't change anything then he's taking the piss. If anything we've got less aggressive, less risk averse as things have got worse. He has built up this huge amount of goodwill, why fucking waste it playing the most boring football in the league?

Just like winning, losing becomes a habit which results in a lack of confidence which in turn creates a safety first attitude which leads to mistakes and losing games.
I don't know what the answer is but at the moment it seems a long way off.

Liverpool played one more competitive match than us last season?
Dipperpool havent won 6 out of 7 Pls, or 4 in a row PLs, or won the CL, or been in a CL semi,or won the ECC or the WCC.

That cumulative load of intense, high stress, games has overloaded the players physicaly & mentally.

They are drained to empty, then a vicious cycle of injuries, illness, loss of form, loss of confidence a perfect storm of rinse and repeat leads us to where we are now.

Shouting abuse and turning on the players should be beyond City fans, leave that to the rags.

The squad could've/should've been evolving with elite young players during the last 18 months.....strengthen and refresh when you can not when you must.

It hasnt, and therfore the same players have had to play out of position when half fit or ill only to be injured again....rinse and repeat.

Slagging the current World and English Champions off will do more harm than good, and play right into the hands of our vile detractors.

Now is the time to say nowt and keep our councel.

Fwiw.....I beleive the 'rot'
started in the week leading up to the cup final.

The hitherto most professional, hard headed and focused players of the modern era, demonstrated breathtaking complacency in believing they could win a cup final having been on the piss for days.

We lost, and the first chinks of the 'rot' had appeared .

This perfect storm hasnt blown out yet, and is going to take careful management in the coming weeks and months.

Trying to think constructively I think the confidence is so badly shot in the defence that extreme measures are needed until reinforcements can be brought in... So how could we change the mood a bit with what we have now.

Half the problem is our slow predictability, so if nothing else, some change of structure might buy us time.

Thinking radically...

Goal Keeper - Ederson's skilset only works if we are controlling the possession. Ortega is a miles better 'basic' goalkeeper so I'd bring him in straight away. He'd be No 1 for the rest of the season for me.

Defence - I'd drop the entire defence apart from Dias, I'd play the EDS/U23 defence ( with Dias ). The should know each other and be full of running if nothing else.

Midfield - I'd play KDB out wide and be telling him to fire in as many diagonal passes as possible from just inside the half way line and try and connect with Haaland who is making runs but never recieves the ball. Kev can't be box to box any more, so let him use the ball (like we used to!).

I'd play Grealish/Gundo as a 10 up the middle supporting Haaland. (We could also look at bringing back Delap for this).

Kovatic/Stones should be in the conventional holding MF role.

Bernardo/Foden should be given the licence to play Kova and Grealish.

Doku or Savinho to fill the last MF spot but they need to be more direct.

Will this happen with Pep in charge... will it fuck...
Exactly what i'd like to see. I think Pep's form for being stubborn is coming home to roost. Still a god in my eyes but drastic measures needed now.

I think it was a team of footballers who have had to show more fortitude and discipline than any of us will ever know to reach their level. They're going through a bad couple of months out of years and years. Meanwhile you're one of the most embarrassing people on the internet and if our players launched a character assassination on you every time you had a howler of a day they'd literally get nothing else done.
Fucking happy clapper. They were spineless.
