Lead article in the FT today is about a tax avoidance scheme which Ferguson amongst others is alleged to be party to

They borrow money from Barclays Bank and the interest is offset against Tax and in return for annual payments to Disney they receive licensing payments from Disney films. Inland Revenue ruled against this scheme and they face big tax bills
can you expand on this a little mate?
It's the front page on the FT Weekend edition.

They say he's one of 289 investors in an film partnership described as an "aggressive tax avoidance scheme".

Collectively the "investors" put £50m into the scheme and borrowed hundreds of millions from Barclays Bank to buy Disney Film distribution rights. Somehow the investors offset tax they are due to pay against the interest charges on the bank loan. HMRC have spoken to the FT and ruled that the licensing payments for the films are liable to Income Tax and the members of this film partnership are liable for huge tax bills

A knight of the realm involved.....Shirley fucking not? pmsl.

Re: United thread 2011/12

Need a big dock to get all 289 in with lawyers could be the trial of the century lasting a century. Maybe Fergie will say not in my lifetime and refer to HMRC as just noisy neighbours.

not read the ft article but if the ft are really saying it's a tax avoidance scheme but it's illegal they're talking cock.

tax avoidance = legal

tax evasion = illegal

FT does not use the word "illegal". I prefer George Osborne's description of tax avoidance such as this scheme - "morally repugnant" - sums up the old pisscan perfectly.
