Does anyone seriously think that the Gareth Bale "transfer" is anything other than a way to get sponsors on board and raise the share price?

I think that is now a given they do this as much as you KNOW Real will make a huge signing just before the president elections come up.
Since about 2 seasons ago this has become more visible in their rhetoric and 'leaked' transfer targets.
That is my opinion anyway.

They dont need to worry about the day to day movement of their share price. It is irrelevant.

On a general point, I can't believe that so many blues think Utd are still in financial trouble.

The risks for Utd are now largely all football related and centred on Moyes.

If they struggle, then the debt overhang becomes an issue as the commercial deals are predicated on success

Financial website Benzigna claimed that "the large cash disbursement for the defender does affect Manchester United's finances, who only reported cash of $113m as of the last filing." ???

So $113 mill = £72 mill minus 17 for the transfer leaves £55 million cash on hand.

Would that be the only money they have for transfers?

It's highly unlikely you pay for a transfer up front, in full. City have spent approx £45m this summer, that doesn't mean we've actually had to find £45m right now, the cost will be spread out over installments most likely. So, even if United do only have £55m "cash in hand" that doesn't mean they can only spend £55m net on transfers.

Is Smalling ever going to make the step up or are they waiting long enough so everyone forgets he cost close to 20 mill and wheel him out as Home grown? They've both been there what 4 years? Who spends close to 40 million on two Centre Backs and still doesn't trust them after 4 years?

Wasn't Smalling £11m and Jones around £17m ?

How dare you suggest that they did not joine age 5. They are worth well in excess of £300 million each now in any case.

according to transferleague.co.uk, jones has been there two years and smalling 3 years

Smalling just hasn't been the same since
