United to buy ‘five more Matas’

MANCHESTER UNITED are targeting as many as five more signings of Juan Mata’s calibre as David Moyes begins the most radical overhaul of United’s first team in almost 20 years.

The capture of Mata for £37.1m from Chelsea is regarded by Moyes and the hierarchy at his club as being just the start of a recruitment drive in which United hope to close the gap on Chelsea, Manchester City and their biggest continental rivals by boosting investment in the squad.

The Glazer family, who own United, accept that despite landing Mata the club are “at the bottom of the mountain” in the improvements necessary and have approved a programme of buying. United have not submitted a bid for Luke Shaw, contrary to reports, but intend challenging Chelsea for the 18-year-old, for whom Southampton want £30m.

Keeping Wayne Rooney is a cornerstone of the reconstruction scheme and the player is moving towards accepting a new contract worth in excess of £50m, though an exact wage package has yet to be agreed. Rooney wants to be certain more big signings will follow and United believe their plans will reassure him. Mata was due to complete his transfer last night after personal terms were finalised and he passed a five-hour medical.

United’s buying programme is likely to accelerate in the summer. They are looking for top full-backs on either flank, at least two midfielders and another leading forward. Moves are being considered for Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos and Mario Mandzukic, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal of Juventus, Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin, FC Porto’s Fernando Reges and Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus.

The situation at Liverpool of Glen Johnson, who has been told he can extend his Anfield contract only if he accepts a drop in wages, also interests United.

The revamp will be on a scale not seen since David Beckham’s “golden generation” refreshed the club in the mid-1990s. A series of departures is likely, with Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra set to leave when their contracts expire at the end of the season and Nemanja Vidic likely to move when his deal ends at the same time. Javier Hernandez, Nani, Rafael and Alex Buttner could also exit. Cardiff are expected to sign Wilfried Zaha, on loan, and Fabio, permanently, in the current transfer window.

United have bought themselves an excellent player for what I think is a fair price.

Now if they can and go out and get another seven or eight excellent players pretty damn sharpish they will begin to resemble a very decent football side.

well it didn't take too long for the actual truth to come out did it - how many actually believed that wee davey and woodwank at old toilet had anything to do with signing mata !!!!

Looks like gollum is already being undermined and really does not have a fucking clue how to go about building a side of his own back

Sunday Express Sport can reveal that former boss Ferguson and ex-chief executive Gill spearheaded hush hush talks to secure Mata while attending last Sunday’s Premier League clash with Jose Mourinho’s side at Stamford Bridge.

Once manager David Moyes had approved the move for the Spaniard Ferguson and Gill swept into action using their contacts to seal a deal before leaving West London.

United knew they had to learn quickly from the mistakes of the summer transfer window in which hesitation deprived them of the opportunity of signing Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and the chance of hijacking Real Madrid’s move for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.

It also cost them another £4.5 million in the eventual deal for Everton’s Marouane Fellaini.

Since then Gill’s successor Ed Woodward has confessed some naivety over last summer’s signings strategy and was happy to stand back and allow Ferguson and Gill to open some doors over Mata.

There was also no haggling over the fee – even though it meant Chelsea making a £13 million profit on the Spanish international – United learning from the mistakes of last summer.

In fact with the owners, the Glazers, fully backing a restructuring of the squad Moyes inherited, the United scouting team were on full alert to recommend further signings.

Only marquee performers have been under consideration. Mata came into this category but until a few weeks ago United felt he was unobtainable and they were looking elsewhere.

Alerted to the fact that Mourinho was deliberately cold shouldering the midfielder who has been Chelsea’s player of the year for the past two seasons, they sprang into action to smash their previous biggest outlay, the £30.75 million needed to bring Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs.

United are anxious to tie down Wayne Rooney with a new contract but until it’s signed doubts over his long term future will persist.

Chelsea continue to be interested in the England star and so another top line striker is on the Old Trafford wish list.

There was talk within OId Trafford of triggering the £32 million release clause enabling United to land Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa in the January window.

However it’s understood that chief scout Jim Lawlor left the latest spying mission on the forward unimpressed and so Costa has been relegated to the deals pending tray.

On Friday night Moyes watched Bayern Munich and although striker Mario Mandzukic was injured, he could be on the move in the summer with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund.

The Croatian has been on Moyes’ radar for some time. As reported in Sunday Express Sport Moyes feels more confident when it comes to highlighting potential targets after reorganising his scouting network, having Everton old boys like Robbie Cooke, John Murtough and Mick Doherty on board.

These are people he trusts and who will help formulate a new look United squad which will carry the Moyes moniker.

There is no doubt that Moyes, reluctant during his time at Everton to risk the club’s money on big signings, has struggled to change his mindset even though the plentiful Manchester United coffers offer a greater licence to spend.

totally agree, but it shows that wee davey is fucking clueless and is having to rely on the help of baconface. Just wondering though as gill is supposedly a UEFA/FA official if this involvement is not actually allowed - not sure, does anyone else know ?
