One rule I've always tried to live by in life is that if you dish it out, then you should be able to take it. From someone who spends a lot of time taking the piss out of others, for me it's important not to take myself too seriously all of the time.

In the years ahead, if events unfold as I hope and increasingly expect, it is a mantra that united fans should try and emulate as much as possible.

I remember hearing that a significant number of united fans were in the Luton end when we were relegated in '83 notwithstanding the fact that their club were playing the same day. That seemed to mark the beginning of nearly three decades of, at times, highly puerile derision, gloating and scorn at our expense.

united fans ringing phone-ins pretending to be blues affecting gratuitous use of the word "massive"; songs about Curly Watts and floodlights; dismissive talk about 'Noisy Neighbours' and a 'small club with a small mentality'; united players refusing to refer to us by name - claiming as they comically still do that Liverpool was, is, their big game; the club endorsed banner which was a byword for a complete absence of grace and dare I say it, class; their fans organising a party to mark our 30 years without a trophy.

All these things were there to serve the purpose of self-amusement, but they were also designed to act as a means of asserting a sense of superiority over us. A snidely way of reminding us about who, in their eyes, was boss.

These are things that I took issue with at the time, but largely took on the chin. I hoped and prayed that the dynamics would change, but in my heart I never thought that was anything other than a fantasy.

And now we find ourselves on the cusp of the boot being on the other foot, at least to some extent. If things continue to develop as they have in recent months I will do my utmost not to descend into the same petty, bitter, small time antics that united fans did for all those years, but equally I will never forget the vindictive way we were spoken of and to, by many united fans merely for supporting our club.

On that basis, they shouldn't expect anything other than an uncomfortable ride from me and many other blues and if they have any character about them, it is something they should accept with a degree of good grace and humility that was all too missing when they assumed we'd always be second best.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.
post of the year.

It is indeed. I do, also, like a person who spells "utmost" without a "p".

But you're not comparing like with like when you're applying the mentality of rags with that of Blues. We're just as happy taking the piss out of ourselves and certainly didn't become Blues to lord it over others. Most of us had no or little choice in the matter and we've made the best of what has been a bad job for the most part.

Whereas many of them became rags for the sole reason that the team were successful. They've known nothing but winning trophies but even that's not been enough for them. Their mantra is not simply to glory in their own vicarious success but to mock and deride others. They've done that without realising the utter and complete irony of "fans" like them mocking true fans who have a genuine connection to the club they support and care little about how many trophies they've won.

The truth is that many of them simply won't be able to take the boot being on the other foot.

Ain't that the truth?
"Character building" as my Nan would say.

Yep - but I still find myself resisting sticking the boot in to the 2 or 3 plastics with whom I work - I haven´t mentioned it at all. There´s something about that that gives you the moral superiority and gnaws away at their superficial pride

I took the piss out of them when they were winning everything so I'm hardly going to stop now.

Rvp is 2/1 not to be at utd in january....
Had sky sports on and they had some guy on from a betting company and he said those odds tell me that he's got off the field problems as well...
Oh the gasps that filled the studio from the rag arse lickers.....
No smoke without fire....

Letting RVP go in January, unless they're convinced he's too crocked to contribute for the rest of the season (in which case no one is going to buy him unless it's bloody cheap), would be nearly the largest gesture of white flag waving they could muster. There are wrong messages and there are wrong messages, even the rag pr department would have a hard time spinning that.
I just thought it was a weird thing to say out of the blue by the guy from the betting company. .
There's obviously something going on with van persie and with that Dutch coach calling it right about moyes ruining rvp with his training methods, I reckon the dutch sick note has had enough and advised his agent to get him the fuck out of there asap...
The utd circus is currently on tour of the midlands at the moment, stopping at Birmingham on sunday and calling in at stoke next week.
I wonder if the rags have got a big bill yo pay sharpish and selling Van Rapist will cover it...?

Buts is a fire sale of a crocked ageing player going to raise that much in January? From what I can see round Europe those that he may like to go to don't need him - those that would want him he wouldn't go to or couldn't afford him. Obviously the guy has not learned never listen to your ( inner ) child - gets you nowt but trouble.

Motherfucking +1, very, very well said blue :)

Watching game today in village pub in Glocestershire three others in cheering for Arsenal. When the fourth went in turned out they were Rags. Started with the stage whispers, look at all the empty seats, must be bad for all the city fans buying the league, team of individuals/ mercenaries. Just drank my beer and smiled. Wound them up even more.
