One rule I've always tried to live by in life is that if you dish it out, then you should be able to take it. From someone who spends a lot of time taking the piss out of others, for me it's important not to take myself too seriously all of the time.

In the years ahead, if events unfold as I hope and increasingly expect, it is a mantra that united fans should try and emulate as much as possible.

I remember hearing that a significant number of united fans were in the Luton end when we were relegated in '83 notwithstanding the fact that their club were playing the same day. That seemed to mark the beginning of nearly three decades of, at times, highly puerile derision, gloating and scorn at our expense.

united fans ringing phone-ins pretending to be blues affecting gratuitous use of the word "massive"; songs about Curly Watts and floodlights; dismissive talk about 'Noisy Neighbours' and a 'small club with a small mentality'; united players refusing to refer to us by name - claiming as they comically still do that Liverpool was, is, their big game; the club endorsed banner which was a byword for a complete absence of grace and dare I say it, class; their fans organising a party to mark our 30 years without a trophy.

All these things were there to serve the purpose of self-amusement, but they were also designed to act as a means of asserting a sense of superiority over us. A snidely way of reminding us about who, in their eyes, was boss.

These are things that I took issue with at the time, but largely took on the chin. I hoped and prayed that the dynamics would change, but in my heart I never thought that was anything other than a fantasy.

And now we find ourselves on the cusp of the boot being on the other foot, at least to some extent. If things continue to develop as they have in recent months I will do my utmost not to descend into the same petty, bitter, small time antics that united fans did for all those years, but equally I will never forget the vindictive way we were spoken of and to, by many united fans merely for supporting our club.

On that basis, they shouldn't expect anything other than an uncomfortable ride from me and many other blues and if they have any character about them, it is something they should accept with a degree of good grace and humility that was all too missing when they assumed we'd always be second best.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.
post of the year.
I have a view on how we should behave to them as well:
if you're going to throw shit, keep your hands clean, use a shovel.

Quality as always Gordon, but I'm a little disappointed with the bit in bold. I can almost guarantee that I will be every bit as petty, bitter and small time when it comes to taking the piss out of the entitled cunts. You reap what you sow, and their harvest will have the benefit of 30 years of shit on it.

But you're not comparing like with like when you're applying the mentality of rags with that of Blues. We're just as happy taking the piss out of ourselves and certainly didn't become Blues to lord it over others. Most of us had no or little choice in the matter and we've made the best of what has been a bad job for the most part.

Whereas many of them became rags for the sole reason that the team were successful. They've known nothing but winning trophies but even that's not been enough for them. Their mantra is not simply to glory in their own vicarious success but to mock and deride others. They've done that without realising the utter and complete irony of "fans" like them mocking true fans who have a genuine connection to the club they support and care little about how many trophies they've won.

The truth is that many of them simply won't be able to take the boot being on the other foot.

Ain't that the truth?
"Character building" as my Nan would say.

the thing is unlike us who through the shite times have got through it with a sense of gallows humour, these mard arsed twats can't. just look at any ground of boozer when they loose they leave faster than the bleedin exodus,
for example the other week went in the tib st tav for the sunderland game, plenty off blue, but was a group of middle aged rags who had gone in specially to heckle the sad wankers, city fans just bantered with them and gave back as good as they got, they then fucked off at full time most blue stayed out for a few hours despite result.

Go forward last week in the tst again their game just finished they were all heading out bar one table of them, a full round of beer and aguero scores the tossers left them, who leaves a round of beers also some of them leaving were right narky bastards, look at the 70's when they were getting beat a lot always causing trouble because they are sore losers and mard twats

Great post GDM. The only problem is that as things pan out and we hope and expect it may be difficult to find many of the plastic vermin who actually admit to having been lifelong loyal fans during the rags' glory years. I think we'll see many more of them claiming to have 'lost interest in football' and keeping a low profile in pubs and workplaces. But fuck 'em is what I say. Let's remind them of all their Billy Big Bollocks bravado and pile it on them, especially when the highlight their autumn fixtures is a home League Cup game against Oldham.

Rvp is 2/1 not to be at utd in january....
Had sky sports on and they had some guy on from a betting company and he said those odds tell me that he's got off the field problems as well...
Oh the gasps that filled the studio from the rag arse lickers.....
No smoke without fire....

Letting RVP go in January, unless they're convinced he's too crocked to contribute for the rest of the season (in which case no one is going to buy him unless it's bloody cheap), would be nearly the largest gesture of white flag waving they could muster. There are wrong messages and there are wrong messages, even the rag pr department would have a hard time spinning that.

I just thought it was a weird thing to say out of the blue by the guy from the betting company. .
There's obviously something going on with van persie and with that Dutch coach calling it right about moyes ruining rvp with his training methods, I reckon the dutch sick note has had enough and advised his agent to get him the fuck out of there asap...
The utd circus is currently on tour of the midlands at the moment, stopping at Birmingham on sunday and calling in at stoke next week.
