Fbloke (Andy M) ‏@TheRealFbloke 38m

United fans want to spend BIG. But how much is needed? £100m? £150m? Shame they voted for Financial Fair Play really.
Is it possible they could spend £150m or that fbloke posted that?

They could spend £150m but it's more a case of do they want to. People are confusing two conflicting objectives: wanting to win things (which the fans and players want to do) and wanting to make money(which the Glazers want to do). Under Baconface they could do both to some degree but the Glazers weren't happy about the increase in costs. Some would say that one leads to the other and they'd have a point but the key question is how much would you need to spend to do that and what would it be worth if you did.

There's relatively little difference between coming 1st/2nd in the PL and 5th/6th. There's probably a bit more between going out in the last 16 of the CL and the semis but not a great deal more. They're still a huge global brand so they're pulling in as much commercial income as they can. Maybe in 10 years time if they've disappeared into consistent mid table mediocrity that might change but they're still big.

As I've said, not being in the CL might even be cost-neutral at worst. They'll be clearing some go the big-earners out, plus a few others. Ferdinand, Evra, Giggs, Vidic and Rooney may all go. They could get £50m or more for Rooney, plus some more for players like Anderson, Nani, Valencia & Young. Let's say £25m for those 4. If they stick another £50m in the pot that's £125m.

From an FFP perspective, the major cost would be amortisation so spending £125m would 'cost' them £25m a year over 5 years. But they'd get most of that back in wage reductions so there would be minimal impact on their finances.
No chance can they get anywhere near 50 million for Rooney. He will be in the last year of his contract and if they don't sell they could lose him for nothing the season after.. 30 million would be considered a great offer for him and more than they would likely get. Rooney is also one of those players that is big name and is rated more than he should be by other players. Losing him would be a huge blow in trying to attract other players.

Don't think there is any chance of them having close to 150 million to spend. Most sponsorship deals are also performance based. It will be a big, but certainly not fatal blow to miss out on the top 4.

Losing the likes of Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand will free up wages, but similar to Rooney it will massively dent to their appeal. Top players want to go to a club they think are going places. Even Barcelona struggled to attract players when they had finished outside the top four. Beckham and Owen are two of the players that rejected them and Ronaldinho only went cos Madrid did not consider him a priority. The money freed up on those players would also have to be spent on the players they try and bring in to replace them.
You're right. I forgot Rooney will be in the final year of his contract next season.

No chance he will resign (fortunately) if they sack him they will need to pay the remaining five and a half years of his contract up. He's going nowhere in the short term
That's not quite how it works but you're right, no man with half a brain would walk away from at least a few million quid. That said, he looks like he'd rather be anywhere but there right now. Does he even believe in himself anymore?

This mirrors almost exactly Busby's overriding obsession with winning the European Cup which he did with an ageing side (Foulkes, Charlton, Brennan, Crerand., etc.) and players who weren't really up to it (Aston, Sadler, etc.) with fuck all coming through their youth system apart from Kidd. Busby won his European Cup all right but at the exoense of buggering up the team in the medium and long term. Rapid decline set in and relegation followed 6 years later with no league title for 26 years.

Not qualifying for the CL would cost £30m+

Not qualifying for Europe would cost £50m ish (lost TV revenue and matchday revenue)

They have timed their collapse well because the new PL deal will cover plenty of that lost revenue and they have new sponsorships that sealed pre-collapse.

But that still dosent mean they can spend £150m without it being a gamble on getting back into the CL.

As Andy Green said to me tonight on Twitter

"andersred: @TheRealFbloke Think they will actually. One season out of CL OK. More than one v serious for share price etc."

Now bear in mind this is Ferguson's ghost writer and United apologist extraordinaire Paul Hayward writing this article...oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

A big fuckin ouch!

The briefing has started, they are softening everyone up, watch the vitriol increase and then they will part the ways by mutual consent

I have never liked the bloke, and it has been clear from the outset that there was no way he was fit to manage at the top of the game, his bizarre ramblings of late have just confirmed it to me, I hope he get until the end of the season, but if it looks like they won't even be getting a Europa League place he will be gone

I'm not sure I follow that, but I may be mis-reading it, surely there is a world of difference as while PL prize money probably isn't significantly different, finishing 5th/6th won't get any CL money, and would surely see a large fall in sponsorship money and TV revenue because of the failure to qualify for CL (not to mention less match day revenue ?

United will be well up for the league cup final against City. They will believe they have a chance .

When you say "they" do you mean the board, the manager, the players or the supporters?

I'm not sure about any of those tbh

Need a sweep on when the first media reference to a resurrected 'Green & Gold' campaign starts up again...

In a one off game anything can happen. We used to occasionally beat them when we were shit :)

Can't see it happening in a final though but if Webb decides to re-sign for them you never now.
