"Moyes, however, has time and money on his side. The signing of Juan Mata will just be the start. Later will come the exit of Wayne Rooney, possibly in exchange for Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale"

Patrick Barclay is so full of shit, I really dont know where to start...... Those two above will be going nowhere.

Barclay recently said Janusaz was the best uncapped player in premier league history.
He's a sycophant of the highest order, and very, very dim.

Nah it makes sense for Chelsea if its big money. They don't want Mata and it funds a big striker purchase plus it boosts ManU for the title run in against us and Arsenal.

They won't be short of big money suitors for Mata if they were just patient, but then patience and Chelsea are seldom found in the same sentence, unless it's preceded by the words 'fuck all'.

Maybe but no one offering £40m or thereabouts. ManU are desperate for a boost and right now would sign Krusty the clown if they thought it would help. Chelsea are just taking advantage of the situation and moving on a squad player for silly money. Personally I think they would be dumb not to sell for £40m and do you think Jose cares about keeping ManU down? Jose would be confident in his ability to win the league against a Moyes led ManU if he sold half his bloody squad to them let alone a player he doesn't actually rate.

Besides if Roman gives him the boot he doesn't want that big a rebuild job when he gets the ManU gig...

Unless they are bringing in Falcao it would be stupid to sell Mata this January. That leaves them with 4 players for 3 positions. Their strikers are not great and if Hazard were to get injured they would really struggle to create. Nobody except Falcao would be eligible
for the CL where as Mata is. Mata is also a great sub for them to have when they need to score a goal. Unless they do have Falcao lined up the smart thing to do would be to keep Mata and sell him for 25-30 million in the summer abroad.

I am sure Mourinho IS confident that he can win the league even if Mata goes to United, but that does not make it so. Allegri's an average manager won Serie A when he had the players. Mourinho lost the league last season to a largely manager-less Barcelona. The Mata signing also changes the minds of Rooney and RVP about staying. Even with Moyes in charge they get Mata and they become a force again.

At £35 million is Mata overpriced?

I think he is.

If he was a regular in the starting XI at the Kremlin, then maybe, but he's a player whom the manager doesn't like.

Merlin cost, what, around £25 million?

Mata is not as good as Silva, IMHO, and he's not a first-team regular, therefore not worth as much as we paid four our little genius.

Prices have moved on since then. Silva now would cost 30 million, which is what I think Mata is worth. Him not starting at Chelsea makes no difference, he is still arguably their best player. Good managers don't pick their best players, but the best team.

rag in work have been quiet for weeks, slatering moyes etc now they arent half getting giddy!!!

My rag mate here at work has just said Athletico have tabled a higher bid, according to reports in Spain.

That would be just even more icing on the cake if he opted to go back to Spain instead.

what happened to the claims that united had budgeted 30m a year for signings? This will make it over £60 for the season, albeit on just 2 players when that money could have got them 2 or 3 more good players
It was £30m for the summer and that's exactly what they spent. The Glazers said in the IPO documents that their average spend would be around £30m net per season. So far, the average net spend during the Glazers' ownership is less than £20m.

Also they couldn't have envisaged the position they're in at the moment. The prospect of them not being in the top four/CL and maybe even not in Europe at all must have rung alarm bells.
