Van Gaal, almost any manager, deserves the time to try to put this right. Talk of sacking him is short-termist and ignores more fundamental problems at the club and in the structure of the squad in a post-Ferguson world.

For "...deserves the time to put it right", read "chuck more money at".

First half billion pound team?

From that guiniard article:

When Van Gaal was introduced to the new signing Juan Román Riquelme, he presented him with a baby-sized Barça kit for his new-born son and said: “He’ll need it more than you will.”

What an absolute twat.

Dead right. It seems that the Rags 'Philosophy' is now to excuse failure by introducing the tried and tested old chestnut of 'needing more time.'
The days of a manager getting four or 5 years to build a squad and winning team are gone forever, Van Gaal knows it, everyone knows it, so the only alternative is to throw more money at it.

I see that one of the specialised subjects on tonight's Mastermind on BBC2 is "Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson". I often watch it, having appeared on it, but I shan't be doing so tonight. I just hope (s)he doesn't win.

I look forward to a specialised subject "Manchester United under David Moyes", or "....under Louis van Gaal".

if that exchange took place then it explains everything as to why they are where they are.

Wouldn't you just love to be the person setting the questions?

''Which team smashed 6 past United at OT in 2011?''
''The Maine Road Massacre was dubbed after which game against City?''
''How much did Fergie pay for Veron?''
''Which keeper left the reds and Fergie resigned him for 5m and never played him?''
'''Never in my life time'' was a line quoted by Fergie referring to what?''

Its also worth remembering which manager got Riquelme playing the best football of his career during his time at Villarreal...

And also had the balls to drop him and other big names at his clubs when they weren't performing unlike some.
