I wonder why Liverpool and the rags are signing English players when they can get better players for cheaper abroad.
Have they been told something we haven't ?

I have been saying this for a while. United spent a lot of money a couple of years back on young English players and they along with Liverpool are the ones trying to move the goalposts once again.

Good signing for them, left back has been a bit of a problem position for a few years now as Evra declined. Not sure he's really up to the level of a team challenging for the PL but can't fault them for signing yet another young British talent.
You mean you're not sure whether he's up to the level of his world-class colleagues like Jones, Smalling & Rafael? Fair point.

My thoughts exactly.

Insane amount of money for an 18 year old, and a very large gamble on potential.
£107m on 3 players in 6 months.
£134m on 4 players in a year. That's if you assume the fee in the headline (£30m) is accurate, and the fee in the reports themselves (more than £30m) aren't. If it was us, it'd probably be reported as "just under £40m."
I had to laugh this morning at the BBC's reporting online :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28048866
Luke Shaw: Man Utd sign Southampton defender for £27m

It's only when you read the article that you find :-
England defender Luke Shaw has joined Manchester United from Southampton for £27m, making him one of the world's most expensive teenagers.
The 18-year-old's fee could rise to £31m, depending on his performance.

You're quite right, they would have reported the full value plus his wages and win bonuses in the headline for us.

Seconded (or possibly thirded). You get the distinct smell that certain clubs are whispering together behind closed doors.

I'm pretty sure that while you can have a home grown player rule having a minimum quota for England eligible players breaks EU law.

Yep. Something sinister going on here, and I wouldn't be surprised if these clubs were behind recent attempts to get Scudamore out. If they manage it, it will be one of their own stooges, Dyke, Ayre or someone similar in. Fortunately, the standard of English player is so hideously low that to encourage more of them would be financial suicide for the Premier league as a product.
