Bert Trautmann's Parachute said:Perhaps he paid for it from some of the taxes he avoided paying by having part of his salary paid to him in the name of a company (allegedly). Busby and GPC won the European Cup / Champions' League, and the establishment couldn't give them a knighthood fast enough, and yet no other British manager has been afforded this honour.
Why?
I'm pretty sure (but not 100% I hasten to add) that as a staunch socialist, GPC made "considerable contributions" to the Labour Party. Hence he was put forward for his Knighthood by Blair. In other words.....he bought it ........allegedly.
But that doesn't explain the greatest British manager ever, Cloughie, not receiving ones he was well-known for his socialist principles and openly supported the miners in their strikes in both the 1970s and 1980s.
In my view, there's only one reason why Busby and GPC were knighted and none of the others was; the club they managed.
